The Virginia Wesleyan University men's soccer team (5-1-1) earned a 2-1 victory on the road Saturday afternoon at Roy Gordon Field.
Ben Haynes did well in net notching his third win of the season, he played all 90 minutes in the game, allowed one goal, and tallied five saves.
The Marlins held strong through the first half, with Ben Haynes making two saves and the defense blocking several chances to keep the match even. On the attack, Gio Zizza created early opportunities with three corner kicks and a shot on goal, while Ilan Mejia added another look late in the half as VWU went into the break tied 0-0.
The Marlins broke through early in the second half as Gio Zizza scored his first goal of the season with a perfectly taken free kick in the 48th minute.
Ryan McAdams added the game-winner in the 71st minute, finishing off a pass from
Mason Wakefield to secure the result.
The Marlins finished with 10 total shots, including six on target, while earning four corner kicks.
With the win, Virginia Wesleyan improves to 5-1-1 and continues its strong start to the season.
The Marlins return to action on Saturday, September 27, at 5:00 p.m. when they travel to Greensboro, N.C., to face Guilford College for the first ODAC game.
