The Virginia Wesleyan University women's volleyball team (9-0) defeated Regent 3-0, winning 25-9, 25-19, 25-15.
The Marlins' offense was led by
Hannah Smith, who had 10 kills, with a .529 hitting percentage, 11 digs, two assists, and one block.
Abbey Samples recorded 10 kills, with a .625 hitting percentage, and one dig,
Alexis Shaw had nine kills, with a .563 hitting percentage, and one dig, and
Niya Nash led the team with 27 assists, had one kill, one ace, and ten digs.
Virginia Wesleyan came out hot, jumping out to a quick 4-0 lead, and extending their lead with an 8-3 run to bring the score to 12-3. The Marlins kept the pressure on outscoring the Royals 11-5 to lead 23-8. VWU's offensive pressure won them the first set by a score of 25-9.
In the second set, the Royals' offense got going and held a 4-1 lead early. However, the Marlins went on a 7-4 run to tie the set at 8-8, but the Royals held on to their lead as the two teams traded points until the Marlins went on a 4-1 run to take a 17-14 lead. VWU outscored Regent 8-5 the rest of the set to win 25-19.
The third set was a tight battle with the set tied at 3-3 early, but the Marlins pulled away with a 4-1 run to take a 7-4 lead. Over the next six points, each team scored three, but Virginia Wesleyan rallied with a 6-3 run to take a 6-3 lead. VWU followed that run with a 7-3 run to hold a healthy 23-13 lead. The Marlins went on to win the set 25-15.
