No. 6 Softball Goes 2-0 With Wins Over TCNJ and No. 15 Berry

The No. 6 Virginia Wesleyan University softball team (8-0) went 2-0 on day one of the Triangle Collegiate Softball Classic. Beating The College of  New Jersey 8-2 and defeating No. 15 Berry 7-3.

Game One:
Morgan Tucker led the Marlins going 3-for-4 at-bat with a two-run home run, scored one run, and had five RBI. Lauren Bible was 2-for-3 at-bat with a double, and Mackenzie Myers was 1-for-4, scored one run, and had one RBI. 

Lauren Bible got the win as she pitched 4.0 innings, allowed three hits, two earned runs, and had one strikeout. Emma Adams came in relief and pitched 3.0 innings, allowed zero runs, one hit, and tallied two strikeouts.

After two scoreless innings, the Marlins broke the tie in the third as Julia Piotrowski got to first on a bunt and stole second. Alexis Hudgens followed that with a bunt single to put runners on the corners. Sarah Prosser was walked to load up the bases. With the bases loaded Laci Campbell walked to score the first run. Morgan Tucker singled to left center to score Prosser and Campbell to take a 3-0 lead. 

TCNJ scored two runs in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 3-2. However, the Marlins responded in the fifth as Laci Campbell walked to begin the inning followed by a homer to right-center field from Morgan Tucker to extend the Marlins' lead to 5-2. 

 Virginia Wesleyan was not done scoring as they added three runs in the sixth. Brooke Powell led off the inning with a double, then Prosser grounded out to move the runner to third. Mackenzie Myers singled through the left side to score the runner to lead 6-2. Campbell and Adams were walked to load up the bases for the hot hand Morgan Tucker who singled to center field to score Myers. Then, Olivia Knight reached on a fielder's choice to second, that scored Campbell from third and put the Marlins up 8-2. 

Game Two:
Morgan Tucker had another stellar game going 2-for-3, with a double, scored one run, and had two RBI. Sarah Prosser was 2-for-4 with a stolen base and scored two runs. Mackenzie Myers was 1-for-4 with a double and scored one run. 

Emma Adams started in the circle and got the win today, she pitched 4.0 innings, allowed five hits, three runs, two earned runs, and recorded three strikeouts. Lauren Bible came in relief and pitched 3.0 innings, allowed one hit, zero runs, and had one strikeout.

Both teams were held scoreless in the first two innings of play until the Marlins broke the tie in the top of the third scoring four runs. Sarah Prosser led off the inning with a double to left field, and Laci Campbell was walked to put runners on first and second. Mackenzie Myers layed down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third followed by a single from Morgan Tucker to score Prosser from third. With runners on second and third Emma Adams hit a single that scored both runners to give the Marlins a 3-0 lead. Olivia Knight hit a single to move Adams to second. Julia Piotrowski reached first on an error by the first baseman that scored Adams from second to put the Marlins up 4-0.

Berry responded scoring one run in the third and two in the fourth to cut the Marlins lead to 4-3. 

The fifth inning was scoreless, but the Marlins added to their lead in the sixth scoring three runs and extended their lead to 7-3. Prosser led off the inning with a single followed by a walk from Laci Campbell to put runners on first and second. Mackenzie Myers hit a double to left-center field to score Prosser and move Campbell to third. A passed ball scored Campbell and moved Myers to third followed by a sacrifice fly from Tucker to score Myers to seal the win for the Marlins.
