The Virginia Wesleyan University softball team (19-1, 6-0 ODAC) defeated conference opponent Guilford 10-1 in game one and 10-1 in game two.
Game One:
Olivia Knight led the Marlins' offense as she was 3-for-4 with a two-run home run, scored two runs, and tallied four RBI. Mackenzie Myers was 3-for-4, scored two runs, had two RBI, and stole a base and teammate Emma Adams was 1-for-4, with a double, and two RBI.
Lauren Bible recorded her 11th with of the season, pitched 6.0 innings, allowed three hits, one earned run, and tallied 10 strikeouts.
The Marlins struck first in the opening inning when Sarah Prosser walked, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Mackenzie Myers drove her in with an RBI single up the middle. Guilford responded in the bottom half, tying the game at 1-1.
Virginia Wesleyan regained the lead in the third inning when Myers singled and advanced to third on a double by Morgan Tucker. Olivia Knight then delivered an RBI single to left center, putting the Marlins up 2-1.
The lead expanded in the fourth, thanks to a Guilford fielding error and clutch hitting from Sarah Prosser, whose RBI single brought in the pinch runner Riley Curtice from third to put the Marlins up 3-1.
The Marlins broke the game open in the fifth when Morgan Tucker hit a lead-off single to center field, followed by an Olivia Knight two-run homer to right field, extending the lead to 5-1.
They continued their dominance in the sixth, scoring five more runs, on four hits, highlighted by Mackenzie Myers' RBI single, Olivia Knight's RBI single, a sacrifice fly from Julia Piotrowsk, and a two-run double by Emma Adams.
The Virginia Wesleyan defense and good pitching held the Quakers to one run to seal the 10-1 win.
Game Two:
Laci Campbell led the offense in game two as she went 2-for-2, registered three RBI, and stole two bases. Morgan Tucker had a day going 2-for-3, with a home run and a double, scored two runs, and had one RBI. Sarah Prosser did well going 1-for-3 at the plate, scored two runs, with one RBI, and stole two bases.
The Marlins got on the board early in the first inning when Sarah Prosser doubled, stole third, and scored on an RBI single by Laci Campbell.
Virginia Wesleyan extended their lead in the second, Julia Piotrowski was walked to lead off the inning and stole second and third. Then, Joslyn Woodard was walked and teammate Mirandah Jenkins singled to load up the bases for Sarah Prosser who grounded out to the shortstop to score Piotrowski from third to lead 2-0. With runners on second and third, Laci Campbell hit a clutch single up the middle to score Jenkins and Woodard to extend the Marlins lead to 4-0.
A five-run third inning broke the game open, with the Marlins taking advantage of Guilford's defensive miscues. Morgan Tucker hit a lead-off double to start the inning, Woodard walked, followed by Jenkins reaching first on a throwing error to load up the bases for Alexis Hudgens who singled to center field scoring Tucker and Woodard to lead 6-0. With two runners on Prosser put the ball in play and reached on a throwing error that scored Hudgens and Jenkins to put VWU up 9-0.
Morgan Tucker sealed the Marlins' dominance in the fourth with a solo home run to right center, extending the lead to 10-0.
Guilford managed to get on the board in the fourth inning, but it was too late as the Marlins pitching and defense held firm to win 10-1.
