The Virginia Wesleyan University softball team (21-1, 8-0 ODAC) defeated conference opponent Averett winning 6-2 in game one and 10-0 in game two.
Game One:
Olivia Knight led the offense as she went 2-for-4 with two RBI, Julia Piotrowski went 2-for-3, with a home run, and one RBI, and Laci Campbell was 2-for-3 and scored two runs.
Lauren Bible got her 12th win in the circle, she pitched a complete game 7.0 innings, allowed six hits, two runs, and recorded five strikeouts.
Virginia Wesleyan wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. Laci Campbel singled through the left side and promptly stole second. Mackenzie Myers followed with a single to shortstop, setting the stage for Morgan Tucker, who flew out to center field, allowing both runners to advance. Then, Olivia Knight delivered a clutch single to left field, driving in Campbell and Myers to give VWU an early 2-0 lead.
The Marlins added another run in the third inning as Sarah Prosser led off with a double down the left field line, followed by a walk to Laci Campbel. Mackenzie Myer executed a sacrifice bunt, advancing both runners. Then, Morgan Tucke hit a sacrifice fly to shortstop, allowing Prosse to score extending their lead to 3-0.
VWU continued to add to their lead in the fourth. After, Julia Piotrowski launched a solo home run to left field. Samantha Deitsch followed with a single and stole second, advancing to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Alexis Hudgens laid down a sacrifice bunt, allowing Deitsch to score. Virginia Wesleyan ended the inning with a 5-0 lead.
Averett finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth scoring one run to bring the score to 5-1.
The Marlins added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Laci Campbell singled up the middle and stole both second and third. Then, Mackenzie Myers hit a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing Campbell home to extend the lead to 6-1.
Averett attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh. However, the rally fell short and Virginia Wesleyan sealed its 6-2 victory.
Game Two:
Morgan Tucker led the offense in game two going 3-for-3 with a double and a triple, scored two runs, and tallied four RBI. Mackenzie Myers was 2-for-3, scored two runs, had two RBI, and stole two bases, and teammate Laci Campbell was 2-for-2, scored two runs, had one RBI, and stole three bases.
Hannah Hearl pitched well to get the win in the circle, she pitched 5.0 innings, allowed four hits, and registered three strikeouts.
Virginia Wesleyan wasted no time setting the tone in the top of the first inning. Sarah Prosser got things started with a single to center field, then used her speed to steal both second and third base. Laci Campbell drew a walk and followed suit by stealing second. Mackenzie Myers capitalized with an RBI single through the left side, plating Prosser and advancing Campbell to third. Myers then stole second, setting the stage for Morgan Tucker, who delivered a two-run single to center to put the Marlins up 3-0.
The second inning saw VWU extend their lead with an offensive onslaught. Mirandah Jenkins singled to right-center and stole second before an error by Averett's third baseman allowed Prosser to reach safely and Jenkins to advance to third. Campbell's RBI single brought Jenkins home, and after another steal, Myers added another RBI single. With runners on, Morgan Tucker smashed a two-run double to right field. A sacrifice fly by Samantha Deitsch brought in another run, making it 8-0.
The fourth inning saw the Marlins add to their lead. Tucker led off with a triple, and after a walk to Olivia Knight, Riley Curtice came in to pinch run. A sacrifice fly from Deitsch brought home Tucker, and later, Bri Jones knocked an RBI single to right field to bring in Curtice, making it 10-0.
Virginia Wesleyan dominated the contest from start to finish, securing a convincing 10-0 victory.
