Marlins Cruise Past Meredith in Season Opener

The Virginia Wesleyan University softball team (2-0) defeated Meredith 11-1 in game one and 9-0 in game two.

Game One:

Mackenzie Myers went 2-for-2 at the plate with a double, one RBI, and scored one run, Alison Pollack went 2-for-2, with one RBI, and scored three runs, and Olivia Knight was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI, and scored a run.

Emma Adams recorded the win in the circle and pitched 3.0 innings, with five strikeouts, allowed zero runs, and one hit.

Virginia Wesleyan was hot early as they scored four runs in the first inning. Sarah Prosser started the rally with a single and stole second and third base before Myers hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Prosser. Campbell singled up the middle, Alison Pollack walked, and both stole a base to move to second and third, while Adams hit a single to score Campbell. Up 2-0 with runners on first and third, Olivia Knight doubled to score Pollack to go up 3-0. Joslyn Woodard reached first on a dropped third strike that got behind the catcher to score Adams from third and put VWU up 4-0.

The Marlins scored two runs in the fifth inning as Pollack led off the inning with a single down the left field line, followed by a double from Haley Sadler to score Pollack. Knight's groundout to third moved Sadler to third, and Mackenzie Swanson walked and stole second. Then, Julia Piotrowski hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Sadler and put VWU up 6-0.

Virginia Wesleyan kept up the pressure and scored five runs in the fourth inning off four hits to extend their lead to 11-0.

The Angels scored in the fifth inning, but the Marlins' defense held strong and sealed the 11-1 win over Meredith. Myers singled up the middle and stole second before Pollack singled scoring Myers. Sadler walked followed by a single from Knight that scored Pollack. Bri Jones walked to load up the bases. Samantha Deitsch walked to score Sadler and Beltran singled to score Knight from third and Jones from second.

Game Two:

Emma Adams was 2-for-2 with a two-run homer, two RBI, and scored two runs, Mackenzie Myers was 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI, and Sara Prosser was 1-for-3 with a triple, two RBI, and two runs.

Lauren Bible tallied the win in game two and pitched 4.0 innings, had two strikeouts, and allowed zero runs, and one hit.

VWU began scoring in the bottom of the first, as Prosser reached on an error by third base, Laci Campbell walked, and Pollack doubled to score Prosser. Campbell scored on a passed ball, just before Adams homered to right field to give the Marlins a 4-0 lead. Lauren Bible tripled to left center field, and Julia Piotrowski singled up the middle to score Bible to lead 5-0.

After being held scoreless in the second inning, Virginia Wesleyan got back on track in the third. Adams led off the inning and hit a double advancing the third on a passed ball. Bible hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Adams. Piotrowski doubled to center field, Alexis Hudgens reached first on an error by the pitcher, and Prosser tripled up the middle to score Hudgens and Piotrowski to lead 8-0. Myers singled up the middle to score Prosser from third to seal the 9-0 win for the Marlins.
