The Virginia Wesleyan University women's volleyball team (31-1, 11-0 ODAC) defeated the #8 seed Roanoke 3-0 in the quarter finals of the ODAC Championship tournament, winning 25-15, 25-12, and 25-15.
Hannah Smith led the offense with 14 kills, with a .300 hitting percentage, three block assists, two aces, and seven digs.
Brianna Clay had nine kills, with a monster .900 hitting percentage, six block assists, one solo block, three digs, and one ace.
Alexis Shaw had 11 kills, with a .391 hitting percentage, three block assists, and two digs.
Niya Nash led the team in assists with 35 and had 12 digs, and teammate
Skylar Rivers recorded a team high 15 digs and had five assists.
Virginia Wesleyan started the match strong, building a 4-1 run early in the set. The two teams traded points to bring the score to 10-6, until the Maroons went on a 6-0 run to force a Marlins timeout. After the break, VWU rallied and went on a monster 15-3 run to win set one 25-15.
The Marlins continued their good run of play in the second set as they jumped out to a 6-2 lead. However, the Maroons countered with a 4-1 run to cut the lead to 7-6, but Virginia Wesleyan responded with a 6-0 run to hold a 13-6 lead midway through the set. VWU continued to apply pressure and went on an 11-4 run to lead 24-10. The Maroons outscored the Marlins 2-1 at the end, but VWU won set two 25-12.
In the third set, Roanoke turned it up and held an early 5-4 lead over the Marlins. However, that was short-lived, and VWU went on a 5-0 run to lead 9-5. The Maroons countered with a 3-1 run to bring the score to 10-8, but the Marlins responded with a 4-0 run to lead 14-8. Roanoke rallied and outscored the Marlins 6-5 to cut the Marlins' lead to 19-14, but the Marlins closed out the set, going on a 6-1 run to win 25-15.
