Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Marlins Battle Defending ODAC Champions at Washington and Lee

The Virginia Wesleyan women's tennis team traveled to Lexington, VA to face the Generals of no. 10 Washington and Lee in their first dual match of the season. The match was played indoors due to wet conditions.

Division III tennis now follows a Division I and II scoring format of seven points per match. Doubles is played first, and one point is awarded to the team that wins the best of three doubles matches. Singles play follows where six points are awarded.

Sophomore, Mikisha Thomas, paired with freshman, Lina Hackner at no. 3 doubles. Hackner served well to put the team in a competitive position, but ultimately they fell short 6-3. The Generals also won at the top two spots to put them ahead 1-0 going into singles.

The Marlins' lineup was led by team captain, Tuva Flink, at no. 1 singles with freshmen playing in lines two through six. The young team rallied hard at every spot, but the day was highlighted with performances at no. 2 and no. 6 six singles by Zoe Vliegen and Sarah Reich respectively.

Zoe Vliegen found herself down 0-5 in the first set then climbed back to win two games, ultimately falling short 6-2 in the first set. She carried her momentum into the second set, forcing a tiebreaker that ended in a 7-2  loss.

Sarah Reich was last on court to finish her match. After losing the first set 6-2, Reich sped to a 3-0 lead in the second and saw a set point opportunity at 5-4. Reich was unable to close, ultimately losing 7-5.

The Marlins will return to competition on October 13 in a scrimmage at DII Chowan University.
