The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team (4-6, 2-1 ODAC) defeated conference opponent Averett 13-8.
Michaela Elston led the team as she tallied four goals, had five draw controls, caused two turnovers, and had one ground ball,
Gianna Delevan registered three assists, two ground balls, and caused one turnover, and
Helen Kennedy-Butler tallied three goals, was 1-for-1 on free position shots, had two ground balls, and caused two turnovers.
Brittneyann Hoover started in the net and got the win, allowing eight goals, and making seven saves.
Virginia Wesleyan wasted no time getting on the board as
Helen Kennedy-Butler scored an unassisted goal to put the Marlins up 1-0. The Cougars responded with one goal, but Kennedy-Butler found the back of the net again to put VWU up 2-1. The Marlins held on to the lead until Averett scored in the last minute of the quarter to tie the game at 2-2.
Maya Perry scored the first goal of the second quarter to put the Marlins up 3-2, but the Cougars came back to score two straight goals to take a 4-3 lead. VWU responded with three goals before the end of the first half to take a 6-4 lead.
Gabriella Watton scored with an assist from
Maya Perry, then Helen Kenndy-Butler scored on a free position shot to put the Marlins up 5-4.

Gianna Delevan in the last minute of the second quarter.
In the third quarter, each team scored a man-down goal as
Maya Perry scored for the Marlins with an assist from
Gianna Delevan to lead 7-4, but the Cougars scored a goal to bring the score to 7-5 heading into the final frame.
Virginia Wesleyan pulled away in the fourth quarter.
Michaela Elston scored an unassisted goal to lead 8-5.
Madison Pfister scored a man-up goal with an assist from
Gianna Delevan. Then,
Madison Pfister scored an unassisted goal to put the Marlins up 10-5.
Shaunice Rone got on the board with a free-position goal. Elston scored her third goal of the game to put the Marlins up 12-5 midway through the fourth quarter. Averett came back scoring three goals over the next four minutes to cut the lead to 12-8.
Michaela Elston scored her fourth with an assist from
Gabriella Watton to seal the 13-8 win over Averett.
