Virginia Wesleyan Baseball team (20-17, 11-11 ODAC) split a senior day doubleheader against Washington and Lee University winning game one 11-5 but losing game two 3-2. Their win in game one clinched them a spot in the 2024 ODAC Baseball Tournament, their first appearance since 2019.
Game 1:
On the mound for the Marlins in game one was first year Nick Beatty threw 6.1 innings in the win. He allowed five hits, two runs, two walks, and three strikeouts. Offensively Senior Thomas Crandall was 3-4 with four runs, and a walk. Senior Micah Fox was 3-4 with six rbi and a walk.
The Marlin's got the scoring started in the bottom of the third scoring four runs. First year Jason Caccavaro led off the inning with a walk, Crandall then singled putting two on with no outs. Micheal Burton Jr. got on via an error loading the bases. Fox then singled up the middle scoring Caccavaro and Crandall to make it a 2-0 game. A few batters later senior Chris Mitchell Jr. reached on an error by the Generals third baseman to reload the bases. Senior Sam Kasprow singled to left, scoring Burton Jr. making it a 3-0 game. Junior John Bastiaans grounded to the Washington and Lee first baseman, scoring Fox making it a 4-0 game.
The Generals scored one run one two hits to make it a 4-1 game.
VWU scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Back to back singles by Crandall and Burton Jr. but two on with no outs. Fox reached on an error by the Generals shortstop, scoring Crandall and putting Burton Jr. on third making it a 5-1 game. Junior Nick Sylvester singled to right, scoring Burton Jr. making a 6-1 game. Mitchell Jr. got on virtue of a single right back to the pitcher. A passed ball scored Fox to make it a 7-1 game.
In the bottom of the fifth the Marlin's scored two more runs. Crandall walked putting him on with two outs, Burton Jr. singled putting Crandall in scoring position. Fox doubled which scored Crandall and Burton Jr. making it a 9-1 game.
Washington and Lee scored one run in their half of the seventh on two hits making it a 9-2 game.
The Marlins scored two runs in the top of bottom of the seventh. Crandall led off the inning being hit by the pitch. He then stole second before advancing to third on an error by the pitcher. Fox singled, scoring Crandall making it a 10-2 game. Mitchell Jr. got to first because of a single by the shortstop, loading the bases. A passed ball scored Fox to make it an 11-2 game.
In the top of the ninth the Generals scored three runs on four hits with one error making the game an 11-5 final.
Game 2:
On the mound for the Marlins first year Jack McDowell went six innings allowing six hits, three runs and six strikeouts despite taking the loss. Offensively the Marlins were led by Fox who was 2-4 with a walk, and Mitchell Jr. was 1-5 with a home run.
The score remained 0-0 till the top of the sixth when the Generals scored three runs on two hits and an error to make it a 3-0 game. The Marlins responded though with a solo home run by Mitchell Jr. making it a 3-1 game.
In the bottom of the ninth the Marlin's made it a one run game. Senior Jackson Hughes reached first because of an error by the Washington and Lee short stop. Sophomore Marcell Whitfield pitch ran for Hughes. Crandall reached on a fielder's choice, Whitfield reached second on an error by the shortstop. Burton Jr. singled, scoring Whitfield making it a 3-2 game.
The Marlin's enter the postseason against Roanoke College in a best of three series May 3-5 in Salem, Va.
