The VWU baseball team (19-15, 10-9 ODAC) lost both games to conference team Roanoke College. Game one had a final score of 9-7 and game two had a final score of 5-4.
Game 1:
Leading the Marlins offensively was Senior Thomas Crandall who was 3-5 with one run, Micah Fox was 2-3 with one run and two walks.
The Marlins scored first in the top of the first. Crandall led off the game with a triple. A batter later Micheal Burton Jr filed out to center field scoring Crandall to make it a 1-0 game. The Marlins added one more run in the top of the fourth off a solo homer by Josh Goodrich to make it a 2-0 game.
In the top of the fifth VWU added another run. Chris Mitchell Jr. led off the inning with a single. A few batters later John Bastiaans walked, a balk by the pitcher advanced Mitchell Jr and Bastiaans, Goodrich then got to first on an error by the Maroons third baseman that scored Mitchell Jr. to make it a 3-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, Roanoke scored two runs on three hits to make it a 3-2 game. They then took the lead in the bottom of the sixth on two more runs and three hits to make it a 4-2 game.
In the top of the eighth, VWU scored three runs. A double by Sam Saunders led off the inning, he then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Burton Jr. walked and advanced to second on an error by Roanoke's catcher which scored Saunders making it a 4-3 game. Fox then singled and went to second on the throw by Roanoke's outfielder that but Burton Jr on third. Nick Sylvester hit a three run home run to score himself, Burton Jr. and Fox.
In the bottom of the eighth the Maroons scored five runs on five hits to make it a 9-7 game.
Game 2:
In the second game the Marlins were led offensively by Sylvester who was 3-5 with two rbi. Ty James was 2-2 with a walk.
The Marlins scored two runs in the top of the first. Leading off the game was Crandall with a walk, Burton Jr came up and hit a double and then Fox walked. Sylvester then singled, scoring Crandall and Burton Jr. making it a 2-0 game. The Maroons scored one run in the bottom of the first.
Roanoke scored three more runs in the bottom of the third on four hits making it a 4-2 game. They added another run in their half of the sixth to make it a 5-2 game.
In the top of the ninth the Marlins scored two runs to make it a one run game. Burton Jr. singled to lead off the inning, Sylvester doubled to center to put two men on with only one out. Cliff Ewell came into the game to run for Sylvester, Mitchell Jr. doubled to left center scoring both Burton Jr. and Ewell. The game ended with a final score of 4-2.
The team returns home on Tuesday April 23rd against Randolph-Macon at 3:00 p.m.
