Baseball Loses to Hampden-Sydney in Midweek Match-Up

The VWU baseball team (19-13, 10-7 ODAC) lost to conference team Hampden Sydney 7-2 in a midweek match-up. 

The Marlins were led offensively by Junior Josh Bastiaans who was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI, both Senior Samuel Kasprow and Sophomore Sam Saunders were 1-for-2. 

On the mound, Senior Ian Brady went 4.2 innings allowing seven hits, four runs, and had three strikeouts. First-year Zach Miller went 1.2 innings allowing just one hit, one walk, and two runs. First-year Matthew Weber 0.2 innings with just two hits and no runs and a strikeout and first-year Trevor Sheets went 1.0 innings with two hits and one run. 

The Tigers struck first in the bottom of the first with two runs on one hit to make it a 2-0 game. They scored one more run in the bottom of the second to make it a 3-0 game. 

The Marlins scored two runs in the top of the fifth to bring the score within one. The inning started with a leadoff walk by Kasprow. He quickly advanced to second on an error by the Tigers which put Saunders on first. A few batters later Bastiaans hit a double that scored both Kasprow and Saunders to make it a 3-2 game. 

The Tigers scored another run in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 4-2 game, two more in the bottom of the seventh, and one more in the bottom of the eighth to extend their lead to 7-2. 

The Marlins travel this Saturday to play ODAC team Roanoke College in a doubleheader before returning home on Tuesday, April 23rd to play Randolph Macon at 3:00 p.m.
