The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team (3-3) was defeated by Marietta College 12-8.
Ben Andrews led the team with four goals, and one assist, on eight shots,
Liam Murphy had two assists, eight ground balls, and caused one turnover, and
Sam Edwards scored two goals and had one ground ball.
Zack Tucker got the nod in net and let up 12 goals and made 12 saves in the game.
Both teams started the game with great defensive play neither team was able to score in the first ten minutes of play until
Mark Sprague scored an unassisted goal to take a 1-0 lead. The Pioneers tied the game at 1-1 to close out the first quarter.
The Marlins started the second quarter well, as
Sam Edwards scored with an assist from
Ben Andrews to take a 2-1 lead. The Pioneers came back to tie the game at 2-2, but 90 seconds later Andrews scored with an assist from
Liam Murphy that gave the Marlins a 3-2 lead to the 9:32 mark. Marietta scored three straight goals to take a 5-3 lead. VWU responded as
Daniel Auxier scored to bring the score to 5-3. However, the Pioneers scored two more before the end of the first quarter to lead 7-4.
In the third quarter, Marietta scored the first goal but
Sam Edwards responded for the Marlins with an unassisted goal to cut the lead to 8-5. After eight scoreless minutes,
Ben Andrews scored for Virginia Wesleyan to cut the lead to 8-6. Marietta scored in the final two minutes of the third quarter to increase their lead to 9-6.
In the final frame, the Pioneers scored three straight goals to lead 12-6 with five minutes left in the game.
Ben Andrews scored two goals in the final 90 seconds of the game, but the margin was too great for the Marlins to overcome.
