The Marlins played a doubleheader against the Quakers of Guilford College to open up conference play. The Marlins won the first game 14-4 and won the second game 7-0. Their record now stands at 9-5 and 2-0 in conference play.
Game 1:
The Quakers got a run in the top of the first as an error by the Marlins scored their lead-off man. The Marlins didn't take long to score. After Senior
Thomas Crandall doubled to lead off the inning for the Marlins, Senior Micheal Burton Jr singled and scored Crandall tying the game at 1-1. Senior
Micah Fox doubled, then Senior Chris Mitchell Jr hit a three-run home run that gave the Marlins a 4-1 lead.
In the bottom of the third, the Marlins increased their lead, after three straight singles by Junior
Clay Clarke, Burton Jr., and Fox loaded the bases. A wild pitch scored Clarke and allowed Burton Jr. and Fox to advance bases. Mitchell Jr. hit a two-RBI single to score Burton Jr. and Fox. A few batters later, Junior
Josh Goodrich singled which allowed Mitchell Jr. to score. Followed by a single from Senior Sam Kasparow that scored Senior
Chase James and gave the Marlins the 9-1 lead. Clarke singled which allowed Crandall and Goodrich to score and gave the Marlins an 11-1 lead.
The Quakers scored three in the bottom of the fourth after an RBI single scored one and an RBI double scored two that cut the Marlins lead to 11-4. The Marlins scored two runs in their half of the 4th by a Mitchell Jr. double which scored Fox, and a ground out by James allowed Mitchell Jr to score, increasing the Marlins' lead to 13-4.
The Marlins added one more run in the bottom of the fifth when Clarke grounded out which allowed Kasprow to score.
Crandall went 3-for-5 with two runs and a stolen base. Fox went 3-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base and Mitchell Jr went 3-5 with six RBI and a home run.
Game 2:
In the top of the first, the Quakers had the bases loaded, Marlins starter Sophomore
Jack McDowell got out of the jam with great pitching to keep the score deadlocked at 0-0. Crandall hit a lead-off homer to give the Marlins an early 1-0 lead. Next batter Clarke doubled, Burton Jr. then singled advancing Clarke to third, and then scored on an error. A few batters later, Senior
Jackson Hughes singled to score Mitchell Jr., increasing the Marlins' lead to 3-0.
First-year Nate Bryant led off the bottom of the fourth with a single, then Kasprow singled to center field, then Crandall homered to increase the lead to 6-0.
Virginia Wesleyan scored one more run in the bottom of the eighth as Crandall doubled and Burton jr tripled which allowed Crandall to score, extending the Marlins lead to 7-0.
Leading the Marlins offensively was Crandall who was 3-for-5 at bat with a double and two home runs. Burton Jr. was 2-for-3 with two walks and an RBI. McDowell pitched 5.0 innings allowed zero runs, and six hits, and tallied five strikeouts.
