The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team (13-9, 5-3 ODAC) was defeated by conference opponent Randolph-Macon 9-8.
Marcell Whitfield led the offense going 2-for-2 at the plate with a triple and a home run, scored two runs, and tallied five RBI,
Thomas Crandall went 2-for-4 and scored one run, and
Micah Fox was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double.
The Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, and the third inning scored one run to lead 3-0.
The Marlins responded in the fourth inning as
Michael Burton Jr. doubled to lead off the inning, and
Micah Fox singled to put runners on the corners for
Nick Sylvester hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Burton to cut the lead to 3-1.
Randolph-Macon responded in the fifth inning with two runs to lead 5-1.
Virginia Wesleyan scored on a run in the top of the sixth as
Marcell Whitfield tripled, followed by a ground out from Burton to bring the score to 5-2. The Yellow Jackets responded with three runs in the sixth to lead 8-2.
In the top of the seventh,
Nick Sylvester walked to start the inning, and
John Bastiaans singled to center field to put runners on the corners for pinch hitter
Connor Mock, who singled and advanced Sylvester home. With runners on first and second,
Thomas Crandall was hit by a pitch that loaded the bases for Marcell Whitefield. Whitfield homered to left field to bring the score to 8-7.
Down one run in the top of the ninth,
Josh Goodrich singled through the left side, Kasprow reached on a fielder's choice, and pinch runner
Matthew Weber advanced to second on an error. Crandall singled to load the bases, and Whitfield hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Weber to tie the game up at 8-8.
With the game tied in the top of the ninth, Randolph-Macon scored a walk-off sacrifice fly to score the runner from third and seal the 9-8 win for the Yellow Jackets.
