Marlins Stellar Offense Sweep No. 3 Shenandoah

The VWU baseball team (15-9, 7-3 ODAC) swept No. 3 ranked Shenandoah University. Game one had a final score of 5-2, and game two had a final score of 9-5. 

Game One:
Nick Sylvester led the Marlins offensively going 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, scored one run, and recorded three RBI, Thomas Crandall went 1-for-4 with a solo homer, scored one run, and had one RBI, and Samuel Kasprow was 2-for-4 with a double. 

Nick Beatty started on the mound for VWU, he pitched 4.2 innings, allowed two runs on two hits, and had two strikeouts, Ian Brady came in relief to get the win, and pitched 3.1 innings, allowed one hit, and tallied three strikeouts, and Ryan Cowell came in to close out the game and allowed zero runs and hits to record his third save of the season. 

The Marlins scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning. A single by Fox to lead off the inning and brought up Sylvester who homered to make the score 2-0. The Hornets tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. 

In the bottom of the seventh, Crandall homered, followed by a walk by Sophomore Sam Saunders. Sylvester singled and scored Saunders to make the game a 4-2 lead. The Marlins scored one more run in the bottom of the eighth after Sophomore Marcell Whitfield was hit by a pitch, Kasprow singled to put two on and a wild pitch by the Hornets scored Whitfield to make it a 5-2 final score. 

Game Two:
In game two, the Marlins were led by Thomas Crandall who was 3-for-5,  with four RBI, and a grand slam, Kasprow was 3-for-5, with a home run, scored two runs, had two RBI, and Micah Fox was 1-for-4, and had two RBI. 

Jack McDowell got the start in game two and pitched 7.0 innings, allowed five runs on ten hits, and recorded one strikeout, Anthony Roszko pitched the eighth inning and allowed no runs or hits, and Ryan Cowell closed out the game by pitching the ninth inning, allowed zero runs, one hit, and registered one strikeout. 

The Marlins scored one run in the bottom of the first. Kasprow singled and a few batters later Sylvester singled to score Kasprow to make it a 1-0 game. 

The Hornets took a 4-1 lead in their half of the second. Then, in their half of the fifth, they added one more run to make the lead 5-1. 

In the fifth inning, the Marlins scored one run. After Junior John Bastiaans led off the inning with a single, Fox singled a few batters later to score Basstiaans to make it a 5-2 game,

The Marlins scored five more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Saunders led off the inning with a single to shortstop, followed by First Year Nate Bryant who singled to the left side to put two on with no outs. Bastiaans then walked to load the bases for the Marlins. Crandall hit a grand slam to give the Marlins a 6-5 lead. The Marlins went back-to-back with homers after Kasprow homered to make it a 7-5 game. 

Virginia Wesleyan added two more runs in the bottom of the eight. Bastiaans walked before Crandall singled down the left line to move Bastiaans to third. Kasprow then, singled to right field that scored Bastiaans to make it a 6-5 game. Fox then reached on a fielder's choice that got Kasprow out at second but scored Crandall to make it a 7-5 game. 

The Marlins return home on Wednesday, April 3rd, where they will host Hampden-Sydney in conference action.
