The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team (2-1) defeated non-conference opponent Greensboro 17-7 at home.
Liam Murphy led the offense with four goals, and one assist, caused four turnovers, and had four ground balls,
Mark Sprague tallied four goals and one assist, with three caused turnovers and one ground ball, and
Ben Andrews recorded three goals, one assist, and one ground ball.
Zack Tucker got the win in the net and he played 45 minutes, made seven saves, and allowed seven goals against.
The Pride outscored the Marlins in the first quarter 2-1, VWU's
George Psaltis scored the only goal for the host with an assist from
Sam Edwards.
Virginia Wesleyan stepped up the pressure in the second quarter as
Sam Edwards tied up the score at 2-2 early in the quarter with an assist by
Jackson Rockhill.
Parker Lucas scored several minutes later to put the Marlins up 3-2 with a nice feed from
Sebastian Reynolds.
George Psaltis scored an unassisted goal to put the Marlins up 4-2 with 10:11 left in the quarter. Sprague scored a man-up goal with an assist from
Ben Andrews and
Daniel Auxier scored an unassisted goal to give the Marlins a 6-2 lead with 7:37 left in the second quarter. Greensboro scored two back-to-back goals to cut the lead to 6-4 with just under four minutes left in the half.
Liam Murphy responded with a goal assisted by
Kris Barnum off the face-off to lead 7-4. However, Greensboro scored two more goals to bring the score to 7-6 just before the break.
Coming out of the break, the Marlins started fast as Sprague scored with another assist from
Liam Murphy to lead 8-6. Greensboro countered with a goal two minutes later to come within one goal again. VWU took over as they did not allow the Pride to score the rest of the game.
Jacob Carroll scored with an assist from
Sam Edwards 9-7, and Sprague and Murphy scored unassisted goals to lead 11-7.
Ben Andrews scored a man-up goal with a feed from
Sebastian Reynolds and
Liam Murphy scored a goal off a feed from Sprague to hold a 13-7 lead going into the final frame.
The Marlins scored four unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to seal the 17-7 win over Greensboro.
