Slow Third Quarter Cost Marlins in 21-13 Loss to Sewanee

The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team (2-5) was defeated by Sewanee 21-13. 

Michaela Elston led the team as she tallied four goals and two assists, with one ground ball, caused one turnover, and racked up six draw controls, Shaunice Rone was second on the team with three goals and two assists, caused one turnover, and had six draw controls, and Helen Kennedy-Butler registered four goals and one assist, two ground balls, and caused one turnover.  

Sewanee started strong scoring the first five goals of the game before the Marlins answered with an unassisted goal by Helen Kennedy-Butler. The Tigers scored one more goal before the end of the first quarter to take a 6-1 lead. 

Second-quarter adjustments worked wonders for the Marlins, as Gabriella Watton scored a man-up goal with an assist from Kennedy-Butler, Madison Pfister scored off a feed from Michaela Elston, followed by a goal from Kennedy-Butler with another assist from Elston to bring the score to 6-4 with 10:09 left in the second quarter. Elston scored with an assist from Shaunice Rone, to come within one of the Tigers, then Shaunice Rone scored a free position shot to tie the game at 6-6 at the 5:51 mark. The Tigers scored the next two goals to lead 8-6, but the Marlins responded as Elston scored with a goal from Rone at the 1:57 mark. In the last minute of play, Shaunice Rone scored a free position goal to tie the score at 8 all just before the break. 

In the third quarter, the Tiger's offense caught fire and outscored the Marlins 10-0 to take an 18-8 lead. 

Virginia Wesleyan fought back in the second quarter as Kennedy-Butler scored, followed by a free position goal from Rone to cut the lead to 18-10. Sewanee answered with three goals to lead 21-10. VWU answered with two free position goals from Elston and Kennedy-Butler to bring the score to 21-12. Lastly, Elston scored a goal with an assist from Daphne Myers to bring the score to 21-13.
