Women's Lacrosse Beats Guilford 14-7 to Begin Conference Play

The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team (3-5, 1-0 ODAC) defeated Guilford 14-7 to begin conference play.

Madison Pfister led the offense scoring four goals and one assist, grabbed seven ground balls, and won six draw controls, Michaela Elston registered two goals and three assists, had three ground balls, caused one turnover, and one draw control, and Helen Kennedy-Butler tallied four goals and one assist, and had two ground balls. 

Brittneyann Hoover recorded the win and played all 60 minutes of the game in goal, allowed seven goals, and had five saves. 

A slow start offensively for both teams as the Marlins scored the first goal of the game at the 5:27 mark of the first quarter with an unassisted goal by Madison Pfister. The Quakers responded with two goals in the final three minutes of the quarter to take a 2-1 lead. 

Guilford scored two more goals to start the second quarter and take a 4-1 lead. Maya Perry got on the board and scored a goal for Virginia Wesleyan with a nice feed from Daphne Myers. A minute later Madison Pfister scored her second goal with an assist from Kennedy-Butler to cut the lead to 4-3. VWU was on a foll and 14 seconds later Shaunice Rone scored a goal with an assist from Michaela Elston to tie the game at 4-4. Then, with a man advantage, Daphne Myers scored with an assist from Elston to take a 5-4 lead with 3:03 left in the second quarter. Guilford scored a goal to tie the game just before the break. 

After halftime, the Marlins came out strong scoring three unanswered goals to lead 8-5. Pfister scored off a feed from Gabriella Watton, then Helen Kennedy-Butler scored an unassisted goal, and Gabriella Watton scored an unassisted goal. The Quakers scored a goal three minutes before the end of the quarter, but the Marlins took an 8-6 lead into the final frame. 

Virginia Wesleyan kept up the pressure as they outscored the host 6-1. Kennedy-Butler scored an unassisted goal with a player advantage to lead 9-6. Two minutes later Michaela Elston scored an unassisted goal, and 30 seconds later Kennedy-Butler scored her third goal of the game with an assist from Elston. Two minutes later, Elston scored with an assist from Pfister, followed by a goal from Kennedy-Butler that was assisted by Watton to give the Marlins a 13-6 lead. Guilford scored the next goal, but Madison Pfister responded with an assist from Breanna Gable
