The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team (4-4, 2-0 ODAC) cruised past Averett in a 26-5 victory for their first conference win.
12 different players recorded a point in the win, the offense was led by
Liam Murphy who tallied five goals and three assists, four ground balls, and caused three turnovers,
Mark Sprague registered three goals, and four assists, with one ground ball, and caused one turnover, and
Ben Andrews had four goals and one assists, and two ground balls.
Allen Shaw got the win in net, he played the entire first half allowed two goals, and made seven saves.
VWU outscored the Cougars 9-0 in the first quarter,
Parker Lucas scored the first goal of the contest with an assist from
Liam Murphy. Murphy had a stellar first quarter as he had two goals and two assists, Sprague had two goals and one assist, and
Parker Lucas scored two goals.
The Cougars scored in the first 15 seconds of the second quarter to cut the lead to 9-1, but the Marlins went on to score nine straight goals to lead 18-1. Averett scored in the final minute of the first half to bring the score to 18-2.
Ben Andrews scored three goals in the quarter including a man-down goal, Murphy added three more goals to his tally as well.
In the third quarter, the Cougars scored the first two goals to bring the score to 18-4.
Sam Edwards answered with an assist from
Carlton Benton Jr. and
Gavyn Tawes scored to end the third quarter. The Marlins led 20-5 heading into the final frame.
Virginia Wesleyan outscored Averett 6-0 in the fourth to seal the 26-5 win.
