Marlins Split Against ODAC Opponent EMU

The Virginia Wesleyan University Baseball team split a double against ODAC opponent Eastern Mennonite University. The Royals won the first game 11-8, with the Marlins winning the second game 17-11. The Marlins now stand at 10-7 on the season. 

Game 1:
The Marlins started game one hot with four runs in the top of the first. Lead-off batter Senior Thomas Crandall walked and advanced to second when Senior Michael Burton Jr. then singled to left field which allowed Crandall to advance to second. A batter later Senior Micah Fox walked which loaded the bases. Two batters later Sophomore Keegan Megaro walked which scored Crandall from third, to make the score 1-0. A hit by Junior Nick Sylvester and throwing errors by the Royals allowed Burton Jr. Fox and Megaro to score to make the score 4-0. 

The Marlins added to their lead in the top of the second. A walk by Senior Sam Kasprow started the inning, Kasprow then proceeded to steal second. Burton Jr. was hit by a pitch which got two men on. Fox then singled which scored Kasprow making the lead for the Marlins 5-0. 

The Marlins added to the lead again in the top of the third. Junior Josh Goodrich singled and advanced to second on the throw, he scored two batters later when Crandall singled to make the lead 6-0. The Royals cut the lead in half in their half of the fourth inning by three runs on two hits. The Marlins added to their lead in their half of the sixth. After Crandall singled, Junior Clay Clarke hit a sac ground out to advance Crandall to second. A batter later Burton Jr. hit a sac fly which allowed Crandall to score to make the score 7-3. 

The Royals took the lead in the bottom of the seventh. A five runs on four hits which included a grand slam allowed the Royals to take the 8-7 lead. The next half inning the Marlins tied the game. Megaro got on base by a walk and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Goodrich singled to center which scored Megaro. 

In the bottom of the eighth, the Royals scored three runs on two hits and one error to make the final score 11-8. 


Game 2: 
The Marlins started game two scoring in the first inning, just like game one. Clarke doubled which brought up Burton Jr. who singled and allowed Clarke to score. Burton Jr. stole second and a batter later Fox singled which allowed Burton Jr. to score. The Marlins had a 2-0 lead to end their half of the first. The Royals took the lead in their half on the first on three runs and three hits. The Marlins tied the game in the top of the second. Sylvester singled and advanced to second after first-year Nathan Bryant walked. Two batters later Crandall singled which scored Sylvester scored. The Royals took an 8-5 lead in the bottom of the second on five runs and five hits. 

The Marlins closed the lead the Royals made by scoring three runs in the top of the third. Senior Chris Mitchell Jr. singled and a batter later Megaro was hit by a pitch, Sylvester then singled which loaded the bases. Bryant then reached first on an error and advanced to second on the throw but Megaro, Sylvester, and Mitchell Jr. were able to score. In the bottom of the third, the Royals took a 10-6 lead on two runs and one hit. 

The Marlins tied the game in the top of the fifth after a single by Bryant scored Megaro and Mitchell Jr. to make the score 10-8. Crandall doubled which scored Sylvester and Clarke grounded out a batter later which scored Bryant to tie the game. The Marlins took the lead in the top of the sixth. A single and a walk allowed Mitchell Jr. and Megaro to get on base, and after two wild pitches in a row, Mitchell Jr. scored. Megaro scored with a fly ball by Bryant. 

In the top of the seventh, the Marlins added four more runs to their lead. A home run by Burton Jr. scored both him and Clarke. A few batters later Sylvester singled to score Fox, a wild pitch then scored Mitchell Jr. 

The Royals added one more run in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 16-11. The Marlins added one more run in the top of the ninth when Bryant scored on a wild pitch.

The Marlins return home on Wednesday where they play host to defending national champions and ODAC opponent University of Lynchburg at 3 pm.
