Marlins Fall Short Against Apprentice School

The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (3-19, 1-14 ODAC) lost to the Newport News Apprentice School 46-39.

Meadow Dyke led the team with 13 points shooting 5-for-14 from the field and 3-for-4 from the free throw line, had four rebounds, and one steal, Logan Carter had six points shooting 3-for-9 from the field, grabbed two rebounds, one block, and three steals, and Grace Harriman scored six points shooting 3-for-10 from the field, recorded six rebounds, one assist, and one block.

Keys to the Game:

  • The Builders shot 15-for-53 (28.3%) from the field, 4-for-18 (22.2%) from deep, and 12-for-14 (85.7%) from the charity stripe, while the Marlins shot 15-for-61 (24.6%) from the field, 1-for-12 (8.3%) from the field, and 8-for-10 from the free throw line. 
  • The Apprentice School outrebounded Virginia Wesleyan 47-36, but the Marlins scored 24 points in the paint compared to the Builders' 12. 
  • The Marlins forced 27 turnovers, with four blocks and 11 steals, and scored 18 points off turnovers, the Builders forced 17 turnovers, with six blocks and 12 steals, and scored 15 points off turnovers. 

How It Happened:

After going down, 4-2 the Marlins rallied back to lead 9-6 in the first quarter. However, the Builders went on a 7-3 run to lead 13-9 at the end of the first quarter. 

The Marlins went on a 6-0 run to start the second quarter to come within one of the visitors at 16-15, but the Builders went on a 10-4 run to lead 26-19 at the end of the second quarter. 

Coming out of the break the Apprentice school went on a 10-2 run to lead 36-21 with 4:08 left in the quarter. VWU responded with an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 38-29 heading into the final frame. 

In the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, the Marlins outscored the visitors 6-4 to bring the score to 42-35. The Builders made some clutch free throws in the last minute of the game to seal the 46-39 win.
