Marlins Defense Smothers Panthers 72-56

The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team (16-6, 7-6 ODAC) defeated Ferrum in a key conference matchup 72-56.

Waylo Wilson led the team with 11 points, shooting 3-for-5 from the field, 5-for-6 from the free throw line, grabbed seven rebounds, and had two assists, Khai Seargeant scored 10 points shooting 3-for-7 from the field, 1-for-2 from beyond the arc, and 3-for-4 from the free throw line, had four rebounds, and one steal.

Amari Moorer recorded 10 points shooting 4-for-6 from the field, tallied five rebounds, one assist, and one block, and teammate Paul Anderson registered 10 points shooting 3-for-5 from the field 2-for-3 from deep, with two rebounds, one steal, and one block.

Keys to the Game:

  • The Marlins shot 22-for-55 (40.0%) from the field, 9-for-24 (37.5%) from three-point territory, and 19-for-26 (73.1%) from the free throw line, while the Panthers shot 18-for-51 (35.3%) from the field, 1-for-8 (12.5%) from deep, and 19-for-28 (67.9) from the charity stripe.
  • Virginia Wesleyan's defense forced 11 turnovers, including four blocks and seven steals, and scored 18 points off turnovers, compared to Ferrum's defense which forced 11 turnovers, five blocks, and five steals, and scored eight points off turnovers. 
  • VWU scored 10 second chance points compared to the Panthers' six.

How It Happened:   

Ferrum jumped out to a 6-2 lead to start the game, but the Marlins charged back, going on an 11-4 run to take a 13-8 lead. The Panthers countered with a 9-6 run to bring the score to 19-17, but VWU responded with an 8-2 run to lead 27-19 at the 7:16 mark.

Both teams traded points to bring the score 30-24 with 3:51 left in the half. Virginia Wesleyan ended the half strong with an 11-6 run to go into the break with a 41-30 lead over Ferrum.

Coming out of the break the Marlins scored the first two baskets to increase their lead to 45-30, but the Panthers went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead down to 45-38. Virginia Wesleyan responded with an 11-2 run to lead 56-40 at with 10:55 left in the game. 

VWU kept up the pressure and went on a 12-4 run to lead 68-44 at the 6:06 mark in the second half. The Panthers finished the game on a 12-4 run, but time ran out, and the Marlins sealed the 72-56 win.
