Baseball Falls to Penn St. Harrisburg 7-3

The Virginia Wesleyan Baseball team took on the Penn State Harrisburg Nittany Lions in their last game of their Round Robin tournament. They suffered a 7-3 loss which puts their season record at 4-5. 

After a fast first inning, Penn State Harrisburg started the scoring in the top of the second by way of a throwing error which allowed the runner on third to score. The Marlins got their offense started in the bottom of the third, walks by Marcell Whitfield and Keegan Megaro put two on with no outs, and then a Josh Goodrich loaded the bases. Michael Burton Jr. grounded into a double play but it allowed Whitfield to score. 

The Marlins took the lead again in the bottom of the fourth. After three straight singles from Chris Mitchell Jr., Micah Fox, and Clay Clarke that loaded the bases with no outs, Fox scored on a throwing error by the third baseman. The Nittany Lions took the lead for good in the top of the 6th with a grand slam put them up 5-3. 

The Nittany Lions added to their lead in the top of the seventh when a balk scored a runner from third. The Lions scored another run in the top of the eighth after a single scored a run from third. In the bottom of the ninth the Marlins scored their final run of the game. A single from Whitfield started the inning off before he then stole second base, a ground out by Megaro allowed Whitfield to advance to third. A ground out by Ty James allowed Whitfield to score. 

The Marlins were led offensively by Whitfield who was 1-for-2 with two runs. The Marlins are back home again on Thursday, February 29th against William Peace at 2pm.
