Baseball Beats Alfred State

The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team (4-4) after beating Alfred State in game one and dropping game two to SUNY New Paltz.

Game One:
The Marlins starter, Senior Ian Brady started the game off hot, striking out the first three Pioneers to end the top of the 1st very fast. After a quick first out in the Marlin half of the inning, Senior Thomas Crandall singled and then advanced to second on a wild pitch before being picked off after a walk by Senior Micha Fox. Senior Chris Mitchell Jr doubled which scored Fox putting the Marlins on the board.

Brady went straight back to work in the top of the second, the Pioneers again went 1-2-3 with a fly out to right field and two strikeouts. The Marlins started their half of the inning with a strikeout by Senior Sam Kasprow but then Sophomore Marcell Whitfield reached first on a throwing error. Whitfield eventually reached second on a sac ground out by Sophomore Keegan Megaro before First Year Nate Bryant pooped up for the third out. 

The Pioneers scored in their half of the fourth with a sacrifice fly that ended up scoring a run from third, tying the game 1-1. The Marlins took the lead again in their half of the fourth when Magaro reached first on an error and eventually took second which advanced Junior Clay Clarke to third and scored on another error. The Marlins retook the lead 2-1. 

The Pioneers tied the game again in the top of the fifth with a solo home run by the lead-off. The Marlins retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth by an error allowing Thomas Crandall to score. The Marlins added on to their lead in the bottom of the sixth when Senior Micheal Burton Jr, tripled that scored Sophomore Sam Saunders. One batter later, Crandall singled to score Burton Jr. The Pioneers got their final run of the game in the top of the 8th after an RBI single that brought the score to 5-3. 

The Marlins scored their final runs of the game in their half of the eighth when Crandall singled to score Saunders, increasing their lead 6-3. 

Brady was given the win to improve his record to 1-1, Sophomore Ryan Cowell was given the save, his first one of the season. Crandall led the Marlins in the offensive front going 4-for-5. 

Game Two:
New Paltz had two quick outs in their half of the first before a single hit the Hawks, before a flyout ended the inning. The Marlins led off their half of the inning with two quick hits by Micheal Burton Jr and Thomas Crandall but then a pop up, strikeout, and ground-out ended their inning. 

The Hawks' top of the second started with two walks before a wild pitch scored a run. Clay Clarke led off the Marlins' second inning with a single and eventually stole second base before a strikeout ended the inning. 

The Hawks half of the third saw them score the first run of the game with a solo homer which made the score 2-0. The Hawks increased their lead in the top of the fifth with another home run, making their lead over the Marlins four. 

The Marlins scored in their half of the eighth with a sacrifice fly to center field by Burton Jr which allowed Crandall to score from third. The Marlins in the bottom of the ninth tried to make a comeback starting with a single by Clarke which got him to second on an error. Jackson Hughes who came into the game to pitch hit was hit by a pitch that put two on base with no outs. After a wild pitch advanced Clarke and Hughes to put them in scoring position 2 quick outs ended the game. 

Clarke led the day offensively going 3-for-4 with a stolen base. The Marlins end their Round Robin tournament on Sunday, Feb. 25 against Penn State Harrisburg at 2 pm.
