Baseball Late Surge Falls Short against Owls

The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team (2-3) was defeated by Mississippi University for Women 9-7. 

Clay Clarke led the offense as he went 3-for-3, had two RBI, and scored one run Michael Burton Jr. went 2-for-5, with a triple and a double, scoring one run, with two RBI, and Micah Fox went 4-for-5 at the plate and scored one run. 

The Owls scored first in the top of the third to lead 1-0, but in the fourth, the Marlins responded with three runs. Clarke led off the inning with a single and advanced to second when Marcell Whitfield was hit by a pitch. John Bastiaans singled to right field to load up the bases. Goodrich hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Clarke and tie the game at 1-1. Burton had runners on second and third and hit a two-RBI triple to give Virginia Wesleyan a 3-1 lead. 

In the fifth inning, the Marlins added to their lead as Fox doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Clarke grounded out the second to score Fox. 

Mississippi University for Women scored one run in the sixth to bring the score to 4-2. In the seventh, they scored two more runs to tie the game at 4-4. Lastly, in the eighth inning, they scored five runs to take a 9-4 lead over the Marlins.

Burton hit a lead-off double to start the bottom of the ninth, Thomas Crandall singled to the shortstop to put runners on first and second, then Fox singled to center field to load the bases. Chris Mitchell Jr. reached first on an error by the second baseman to score Burton and bring the score to 9-5. Clarke singled to score Crandell from third and Jackson Hughes singled to right field to score Mitchell to cut the Owls lead to 9-7. Clarke was picked off to end the game and give the Owls the 9-7 win.
