Women's Lacrosse Cruise Past Sweet Briar 12-1

The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team started their 2024 season 1-0 with a 12-1 win against Sweet Briar.

Head Coach Maddie Heck tallied her first collegiate victory as a coach.

Madison Pfister led the offense scoring four goals, had five ground balls, five draw controls, caused five turnovers, and was 1-for-1 on free position shots, Gianna Delevan scored one goal and had two assists, with four shots on goal, and had one ground ball, and Helen Kennedy-Butler scored three goals, with five shots on goal, had three ground balls, two draw controls, two caused turnovers and was 1-for-1 on free position attempts.

The Marlins went down 1-0 in the first two minutes of the game but found their rhythm and tied the game at 1-1 with a goal from Maya Perry with an assist by Gianna Delevan. Madison Pfister gave the Marlins the lead with a feed from Gabriella Watton to lead 2-1 with 7:24 left in the first quarter. Virginia Wesleyan struck against thirty seconds later with an unassisted goal from Delevan to lead 3-1 heading into the second quarter. 

In the second quarter, Pfister scored a man-up goal with a nice assist from Maya Perry. The Marlins held a 4-1 lead for most of the second quarter and scored two goals in the last 90 seconds of the half. The first was by Pfister with an assist from Daphne Myer, and the second was scored by Helen Kennedy-Butler with a feed from Delevan to hold a 6-1 lead at the break. 

VWU scored three unassisted goals in the third quarter, with two goals from Michaela Elston and one from Pfister to lead 9-1 heading into the final frame. 

The Marlins tallied another three goals in the fourth quarter to seal the 12-1 win. Kennedy-Butler scored twice one on even strength and one down one player, both goals unassisted, and Gabriella Watton scored with an assist from Breanna Gable
