The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team (18-7, 9-7 ODAC) defeated Randolph 72-52 in the final regular season game. The Marlins clinched a playoff spot in Salem, VA, the team will wait for the rest of the ODAC to determine the final standings.
Waylo Wilson led the offense scoring 18 points, shooting 8-for-10 from the field, 2-for-3 from the charity stripe, six rebounds, and one assist, Jordan Crump scored 17 points shooting 5-for-12 from the field, 3-for-8 from beyond the arc, and 4-for-4 from the free throw line, grabbed five rebounds, two assists, and two steals, and Amari Moorer recorded 10 points shooting 5-for-6 from the field, four rebounds, and two steals.
Keys to the Game:
- The Marlins shot 26-for-51 (51.0%) from the field, 8-for-21 (38.1%) from beyond the arc, and 12-for-13 (92.3%) from the free throw line, compared to the Wildcats shooting 20-for-48 (41.7%) from the field, 5-for-16 (31.3%) from three-point territory, and 7-for-9 (77.8%) from the charity stripe.
- Virginia Wesleyan had the advantage in the post outrebounding Randolph 33-23, with eight offensive rebounds, and outscored the Wildcats in the paint 34-28.
- VWU's Defense held strong forcing 13 turnovers, with eight steals and two blocks, and scored 18 points off turnovers, while the Wildcats forced 11 turnovers, with five steals, and scored five points off turnovers.
How It Happened:
The Marlins started hot going 3-for-3 and 2-for-2 from beyond the arc to lead 8-2 in the first four minutes of the game. However, Randolph came back with a 5-1 run to cut the lead to 9-7. The Wildcats went on a 7-3 run to take a 14-12 lead with 8:56 left in the first half.
Down by two, the Marlins took back the momentum going on a 12-2 run to lead 24-16 with 6:24 left in the first half. Randolph stopped the bleeding, but VWU outscored the host 9-8 the rest of the half to lead 33-24 at the break.
Coming out of the break, Virginia Wesleyan went on a 14-4 run to extend their lead to 47-28. Over the next two minutes, the Wildcats responded with a 7-0 run to bring the score to 47-35 at the 13:06 mark. The two teams traded buckets for the next eight and a half minutes to bring the score to 62-50 with 4:02 left in the game.
Virginia Wesleyan outscored the host 10-2 in the final four minutes of the game to seal the 72-52 win over the Wildcats.
