The No. 6 seed Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team (18-7, 9-7 ODAC) defeated No. 3 seed Guilford 67-60.
Khai Seargeant led the team with 16 points shooting 4-for-7 from the field, 1-for-3 from deep, and 7-for-9 from the free throw line, four rebounds, seven assists, and one steal, Jordan Crump had 15 points shooting 5-for-7 from the field, 3-for-5 from beyond the arc, and 2-for-2 from the free throw line, grabbed five rebounds, two assists, and one steal, and Paul Anderson registered 14 points shooting 5-for-7 from the field, 4-for-6 from three-point territory, two rebounds, one assist, and one block.
Keys to the Game:
- Virginia Wesleyan shot 22-for-44 (50.0%) from the field, 10-for-23 (43.5%) from beyond the arc, and 13-for-18 (72.2%) from the charity stripe, while the Quakers went 21-for-59 (35.6%) from the field, 8-for-24 (33.3%) from deep, and 10-for-14 (71.4%) from the free throw line.
- The Marlins had 19 points scored from the bench compared to Guilfords' seven.
- The Quakers forced 12 turnovers, with six steals and one block, and scored four points off turnovers, while the Marlins forced 11 turnovers, with three steals and four blocks, and scored 10 points off turnovers.
How It Happened:
The Marlins started the game hot, shooting 4-for-7 from the field and 3-for-5 from deep in the first five minutes of the game to lead 11-6. Over the next eight minutes, the Virginia Wesleyan offense was on fire going on a 16-7 run to lead 27-13 with 6:56 left in the first half.
VWU kept up their shooting prowess in the final minutes of the first half and outscored the Quakers 17-12. The Marlins shot 6-for-7 from the field and 4-for-4 from beyond the arc to lead 44-25 heading into the break.
The Quakers came out in the second half and went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to 46-35 in the first five minutes of the second half. Then, both defenses shut down the offense as both teams scored three points over the next five minutes to bring the score to 49-38.
Guilford chipped away at the Marlins' lead outscoring VWU 15-10 to cut the lead to 59-53 with 4:29 left in the second half. With time running out Guilford took risks and began to foul Virginia Wesleyan to conserve time. The Marlins went 5-for-7 from the free throw line to seal the 67-60 win over the No. 3 seeded Guilford.
The Marlins move on to the semi-finals of the ODAC Championship Tournament and will face No. 2 seed Hampden-Sydney on Saturday, February 24, with the game time set for 3:00 p.m.
