Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 2 Hampden-Sydney Defeat Men's Basketball

The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team (17-7, 8-7 ODAC) was defeated by No. 2 Hampden-Sydney 71-47.

Before tonight's game, the Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team honored its three-member senior class composed of Jordan Crump, Eric Rowland, and Miles Wallace. The team also awarded Dr. Larry Hultgren for his 55 years of commitment and service to Marlin Athletics. 

Waylo Wilson led the team with 15 points shooting 5-for-8 from the field, 5-for-6 from the free throw line, six rebounds, two assists, and two blocks, Miles Wallace tallied 19 points shooting 4-for-10 from the field, grabbed three rebounds, and had one steal, and Jordan Crump recorded six points shooting 2-for-6 from the field, had four rebounds, one assist, and one block. 

Keys to the Game:

  • The Tigers shot 31-for-62 (50.0%) from the field, 5-for-19 (26.3%) from beyond the arc, and 4-for-13 (30.8%) from the charity stripe, while the Marlins shot 17-for-46 (37.0%) from the field, 1-for-13 (7.7%) from deep, and 12-for-18 (66.7%). 
  • Hampden-Sydney outrebounded the Marlins 43-24, with 17 offensive rebounds compared to VWU's seven, and the Tigers scored 26 points in the paint versus the Marlins 28.  

How It Happened:

The first five minutes of the game was closely contested with both teams tied at 6-6, but the Marlins went on a 5-0 run to take an 11-6 lead over the Tigers. Hampden-Sydney rallied going on a 14-2 run to take a 20-13 lead with 10:24 left in the half. 

The Tigers narrowly outscored VWU 12-9 over the next six minutes to lead 32-22. The Marlins made a three just before the half to bring the score to 39-25. 

The Marlins came out of the break going on an 8-4 run to cut the lead to 43-33. Hampden-Sydney got hot going on a 16-6 run to lead 59-39. The Marlins' offense attempted to chip away at the lead, but the visitors' lead was too great and went on to win 71-47.
