The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team (1-0) begins their 2024-25 season with a big 79-36 win over Ripon College.
Khai Seargeant led the team as he scored 13 points, shooting 5-for-10 from the field, 1-for-3 from beyond the arc, and 2-for-3 from the free throw line, grabbed three rebounds, two steals, and two assists,
Omari DeVeaux recorded 11 points, shooting 4-for-8 from the field, 1-for-2 from deep, and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe and had one assist, and
TJ East had 10 points shooting 4-for-6 from the field 1-for-2 from three-point territory, and 1-for-2 from the free throw line, and had two rebounds.
The Marlins' defense was strong, as they held their opponents to just nine points in the first 20 minutes of play. Omari opened the scoring with a bucket, and Ripon turned around and made a three to lead 3-2, but the Marlins went on an 11-0 run to take a 13-3 lead five minutes into the half.
Over the next five minutes, each team only scored one bucket to bring the score to 15-5, but Virginia Wesleyan outscored the Redhawks 15-4 to lead 30-9 at halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Redhawks started scoring, but the Marlins responded with a 14-0 run to lead 44-13 at the 15:43 mark of the second half. The Marlins kept up the pressure and built a 64-22 lead with 7:25 left in the game, before VWU benched the starters. The Marlins kept up their defensive pressure and sealed a 79-36 win over the Redhawks.
