Marlins Defeated By the Captains in Overtime Thriller

The Virginia Wesleyan men's basketball team (2-1) lost in overtime to rival, Christopher Newport University, by a score of 74-72.

Omari DeVeaux led the Marlins with 22 points, shooting 7-for-18 from the field, 1-for-6 from beyond the arc, and 7-for-8 from the free throw line. DeVeaux registered four rebounds, one assist, and two steals. Amari Moorer was the second highest scorer with 18 points, shooting 8-for-14 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Moorer tallied 12 rebounds and two steals on the night. Khai Seargeant scored 10 points, shooting 2-for-14 from the field, 1-for-5 from three point territory, and 5-for-6 from the free throw line; he recorded three rebounds and one steal. 

CNU scored the first bucket of the game and went on to lead the Marlins 13-7 with 12:45 on the clock. Over the next three minutes, the Marlins went on a 7-3 run to cut the Captains' lead to 16-14. 

Midway through the first half, the Marlins continued their offensive success and outscored the Captains 8-4 to take a 22-20 lead at the 6:36 mark. The Captains responded, outscoring the Marlins 6-3 over the next three minutes to take a 26-25 lead. VWU's offense strung together a 7-0 run over the last two and a half minutes in the half to take a 32-26 lead into halftime. 

After the break, Amari Moorer scored a layup to put the Marlins up by 8. At the 17:06 mark the Captains went on an 11-4 run to bring the score to 40-39. Virginia Wesleyan responded with a 10-4 run to extend their lead to 50-43 midway through the second half. 

CNU chipped away at the Marlins' lead to bring the score to 64-61. Christopher Newport tied the game with a layup with 38 seconds remaining and was fouled on the shot to shoot one free throw to tie the game at 64-64. Deveaux had a chance to seal the win for the Marlins, but his jumper just missed, forcing overtime. 

With the momentum, CNU jumped out to a 73-68 lead, outscoring the Marlins 9-4 with 33 seconds left in overtime. VWU outscored the Captains 4-1 but could not get a final shot off and lost 74-72. 

Next up, the Marlins face Regent University in a home game on Saturday, November 23 at 2 p.m.
