The Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer team (6-4-3, 6-1 ODAC) defeated Guilford 2-1 in conference play. The Marlins currently sit second in the ODAC standing with 18 points, Washington and Lee are in first with an undefeated 7-0 record for 21 points, and VWU is tied with Randolph-Macon with a 6-2 record for 18 points.
Allie Greco recorded the win in net, as she played 90 minutes, allowed one goal, and tallied three saves.
The Marlins burst out the gate strong as
Emma Nguyen crossed the ball from the far side of the field, aiming for the back post that landed perfectly in the net at the 00:47 second mark to lead 1-0.
Holding a 1-0 lead Virginia Wesleyan kept up the pressure, and in the 38th minute of play was awarded a penalty after the Guilford goalie fouled
Courtney Mills in the box.
Adrianna Gunther converted the penalty to take a 2-0 lead. The Quakers' star player manufactured a good scoring opportunity that got past the Marlins keeper to cut the lead to 2-1 at the half.
No goals were scored in the second half, but the Marlins outshot Guilford 9-1 with four shots on target and sealed the 2-1 win over the Quakers'.
