The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team (13-2, 4-2 ODAC) was defeated by Ferrum 83-79.
Khai Seargeant set a career-high with 33 points shooting 9-for-14 from the field, 4-for-6 from beyond the arc, and 11-for-11 from the free throw line, had three rebounds, one assists, and two steals, Miles Wallace tallied 12 points shooting 5-for-6 from the field, shooting 2-for-2 from deep, grabbed four rebounds, three assists, and two steals, and Elijah Gardner had 11 points shooting 4-for-8 from the field, 2-for-7 from three-point territory, and had one rebound.
Keys to the Game:
- Virginia Wesleyan shot 26-for-57 (45.6%), 11-for-25 (44.0%) from beyond the arc, and 16-for-17 (94.1%) from the charity stripe, while the Panthers shot 30-for-52 (57.7%) from the field, 8-for-12 (66.7%) from three-point territory, and 15-for-20 (75.0%) from the free throw line.
- Ferrum had the advantage in the paint, scoring 40 points in the paint versus the Marlins 24, and outrebounded VWU 29-26.
- The Marlins defense caused ten turnovers, with six steals, and four blocks, to score 13 points off turnovers as well as 20 fast break points, while the Panthers defense caused nine turnovers, with five steals, and three blocks, to score 14 points off turnovers and 13 fast break points.
How It Happened:
Khai Seargeant started the game strong, scoring the first five points for the Marlins to lead 5-2, but the Panthers came back and tied the game at 9-9. Virginia Wesleyan responded with an 8-2 run over the next two minutes to lead 17-11 with 13:05 left in the first half.
The Panthers were down eight, came back with a 10-2 run to take a 21-19 lead over the next four minutes of play. VWU fought back outscoring the host 14-7 to lead 33-28 with under five minutes left until halftime. Ferrum came back with a 10-4 run to head into the break with a narrow 38-37 lead.
The Marlins came out of the break and went on a 9-4 run to start the second half and take a 46-42 lead. The Panthers countered with an 8-2 run to lead 50-48. Over the next three minutes, the two teams traded buckets with VWU outscoring the host 10-8 to tie the game at 58 all, but Ferrum went on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to lead 68-58 at the 7:08 mark. The Marlins strung together some good possessions to go on a 12-4 run that cut the lead down to 79-72 with 45 seconds left in the game. In order to conserve time, VWU started fouling. Ferrum shot 4-for-7 from the free throw line allowing the Marlins to get back in the game as they outscored the Panthers 7-4, but time ran out, and Ferrum won 83-79.
