Men's Basketball Defeats EMU 68-53

The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team (14-2, 5-2 ODAC) defeated conference opponent Eastern Mennonite University 68-53 on the road. 

Waylo Wilson led the team with 20 points shooting 8-for-13 from the field, 4-for-6 from the free throw line, grabbed eight rebounds, with three blocks, two steals, and one assist, Khai Seargeant scored 18 points shooting 8-for-12 from the field, had six rebounds, and one assist, and Miles Wallace scored seven points, shooting 3-for-4 from the field, 1-for-2 from beyond the arc, had four rebounds, and three steals. 

Keys to the Game: 

  • Virginia Wesleyan shot 27-for-53 (50.9%) from the field, shot 4-for-14 (28.6%) from beyond the arc, and 10f-ro-16 (62.5%) from the free throw line, while the Royals shot 17-for-48 (35.4%) from the field, 8-for-19 (42.1%) from three-point territory, and shot 11-for-14 from the charity stripe. 
  • The Marlins had the advantage in the paint outscoring EMU 42-16, and outrebounded the host 36-25. 
  • VWU tallied nine steals versus the Royals' seven steals and had five blocks compared to none for EMU

How it Happened:

The Marlins started the game strong jumping out to an 8-3 lead with Waylo Wilson scoring six of the eight points. VWU Held a five-point lead until EMU went on an 8-5 run to tie the game at 17 all with 8:36 left in the first half. 

The Royals kept in close trading buckets with the Marlins tying the game at 19-19 and 22-22. However, Virginia Wesleyan went on a monster 16-7 run in the last six minutes of the half to take a 38-26 lead into the break. 

VWU made shots early to extend their lead to 43-28 to open the second half. EMU traded buckets with the Marlins and cut the lead to 54-42 with 10:22 left in regulation. 

The Marlins went on a 9-2 run over the next three minutes to lead 63-44 at the 5:14 mark, but the Royals countered with back-to-back threes to bring the score down to 63-50. The Marlins sealed the win with good defense and solid offense in the paint.
