The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (3-10, 1-7 ODAC) was defeated by Roanoke 83-36 on the road.
Maesyn Blaylock led the Marlins with 17 points shooting 4-for-5 from the field, and 9-for-12 from the free throw line, grabbing four rebounds, and two steals, Gabrielle Athy came off the bench to score seven points shooting 3-for-6 from the field, had six rebounds, two steals, and one assist, and Grace Harriman recorded six points shooting 3-for-7 from the field, two rebounds, and one assist.
Keys to the Game:
- The Maroons shot 31-for-58 (53.4%) from the field, 2-for-8 (25.0%) from beyond the arc, and 19-for-29 (65.5%) from the charity stripe, while the Marlins shot 13-for-47 (27.7%) from the field, and 10-for-18 (55.6%) from the free throw line.
- Roanoke outrebounded the Marlins 44-29, and had 50 points in the paint compared to the visitors 16.
How it Happened:
Roanoke started strong building an 8-2 lead, the Marlins responded with a 4-2 run to cut the lead down to 10-6. The Maroons went on a 6-2 run to lead 18-8 with 3:04 left in the first quarter, but VWU responded scoring six points in the last three minutes to bring the score to 24-15 at the end of the quarter.
In the second quarter, the host went on an 8-2 run to lead 32-17 at the 7:29 mark. Then, the teams' offense went silent until the 4:31 mark when the Marlins' Gabrielle Athy scored a layup and made the one free throw to make it a three-point play to cut the lead to 32-20. Roanoke kept up the pressure and went into halftime with a 47-23 lead.
The Maroons came out strong in the second half going on a 12-2 run to extend their lead to 59-25, but the Marlins responded with a 6-1 run midway through the quarter, Grace Harriman scored four points during the run to cut the lead down to 60-31. Roanoke held a 66-33 lead heading into the final frame.
The Maroons held on to their double-digit lead in the fourth quarter to seal the 83-36 win over the Marlins.
