Marlins Drop Contest to No. 1 Hampden-Sydney

The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team (15-6, 6-6 ODAC) falls to the No. 1 ranked team in the country Hampden-Sydney 77-54. 

Miles Wallace led the offense with 12 points, shooting 4-for-8 from the field, 4-for-5 from deep, had three rebounds, two assists, and one steal, Khaliyl Davis registered 11 points, shooting 4-for-6 from the field, 3-for-4 from beyond the arc, and one rebounds, and Khai Seargeant had 10 points, shooting 4-for-7 from the field, had six rebounds, and three assists.

Keys to the Game:

  • The Tigers shot 31-for-61 (50.8%) from the field, 8-for-17 (47.1%) from deep, and 7-for-12 (58.3%) from the charity stripe, while the Marlins shot 20-for-60 (33.3%) from the field, 8-for-23 (34.8%) from beyond the arc, and 6-for-11 (54.5%) from the free throw line.
  • Hampden-Sydney had the advantage in the paint outrebounded the Marlins 47 to 28, and had 38 points in the paint compared to the Marlins 22. 
  • Virginia Wesleyan did well in transition as they forced nine turnovers, with five blocks and six steals to score 16 points off turnovers and tallied 14 fastbreak points, compared to the Tigers' who forced eight turnovers, with three blocks and five steals to scored seven points off turnovers, and had nine fastbreak points.

How It Happened:

The Marlins drained a three to start the half, but the Tigers' responded with a 19-2 run to lead 19-5 at the 13:32 mark. Hampden-Sydney's offense was clicking as they held a 36-8 lead with five minutes left in the first half, but the Marlins managed to bring the score to 46-18 at the break. 

Virginia Wesleyan came out of the break going on a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 48-24. Midway through the half the Marlins went on a 9-4 run to bring the score to 57-33 at the 12:15 mark in the second half. 

Virginia Wesleyan outscored the Tigers in the second half, but were unable to overcome the Hampden-Sydney lead they built in the first half and lost 77-54.
