The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team (13-1, 4-1 ODAC) topped No. 25 Shenandoah 70-58 in a key conference matchup.
Khai Seargeant led the Marlins offense as he had 17 points shooting 6-for-13 from the field, and shot 1-for-2 from beyond the arc, grabbed six rebounds, and one assist, and Braden Justice registered 13 points shooting 6-for-8 from the field, shot 1-for-1 from three-point territory, had one rebound, one assist, and one steal.
Miles Wallace had ten points shooting 4-for-7 from the field, 2-for-3 from deep, with four rebounds, six assists, and one steal, and teammate Jordan Crump tallied ten points shooting 4-for-12 from the field, had one rebound, and three assists.
Keys to the Game:
- Virginia Wesleyan shot 29-for-61 (47.5%) from the field, 4-for-15 (26.7%) from deep, and 8-for-13 from the charity stripe, while the Hornets shot 20-for-59 (33.9%) from the field, 7-for-26 (26.9%) from beyond the arc, and 11-for-13 from the free throw line.
- The Marlins had the advantage in the paint scoring 44 points inside compared to Shenandoah's 22, however, the Hornets outrebounded the Marlins 40-34.
- VWU caused 16 turnovers with nine steals and four blocks, to score 15 points off turnovers, while the Hornets caused 10 turnovers with three steals and four blocks to score 11 points off turnovers.
How It Happened:
Both teams started slow, as the first basket wasn't scored until the 18:05 mark by the Hornets who went on a 9-4 run to jump out with an early lead. The Marlins responded with a 10-3 run to take a 14-12 lead with 9:08 left in the first half.
A tight contest saw the Shenandoah narrowly outscore VWU over the next six minutes 12-10 to tie the game at 24-24. With two and a half minutes left in the half, the Hornets went on a 7-4 run to go into the break with a 31-28 lead.
Halftime adjustments worked wonders for Virginia Wesleyan as the defense held the Hornets to no points in the first 5:50 of the second half to spark a 13-0 run from the host to lead 41-31. VWU extended their lead further with an 8-4 run to lead 49-35 with 11:50 left in regulation.
Shenandoah responded with a 7-0 run from their leading scorer Jaylen Williams to cut the lead to 49-42. The Marlins countered with a 10-4 run over the next three minutes to lead 59-46 at the 6:13 mark.
The Hornets kept fighting until the end and outscored the Marlins 12-11 in the last five minutes of the game, but Virginia Wesleyan's lead was too great and they went on to win 70-58.
