The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (3-16, 1-12 ODAC) was defeated by No. 23 Washington and Lee 78-44.
Maesyn Blaylock led the team with 10 points shooting 5-for-12 from the field, had four rebounds, two steals, and two assists, and Mekayla Clarke tallied 10 points shooting 4-for-16 from the field, and 1-for-2 from deep, grabbed six rebounds, one assist, and two steals, and Grace Harriman had seven points shooting 3-for-11 from the field, 1-for-3 from beyond the arc, and had one assist.
Keys to the Game:
- The Generals shot 30-for-61 (49.2%) from the field, 7-for-21 (33.3%), and 11-for-17 (64.7%) from the charity stripe, while the Marlins shot 19-for-70 ( 27.1%) from the field, 3-for-14 (21.4%) from deep, and 3-for-6 (50%) from the free throw line.
- W&L had the advantage down low scoring 44 points in the paint and scored 15 second chance points, compared to Virginia Wesleyan's 28 points in the paint and nine second chance points.
How It Happened:
The Generals started hot on a 7-0 run to force a VWU timeout, but the Marlins responded with a 9-3 run to cut the lead down to 10-9 at the 4:25 mark in the first quarter. Washington and Lee outscored the Marlins 10-3 the rest of the quarter to lead 20-12 at the end of the first quarter.
VWU came out and kept up with the No. 23 ranked team in the country with each scoring eight points to start the second quarter to bring the score to 28-20. Then, W&L went on an 11-3 run to lead 39-23 with 2:29 left in the half, but the Marlins finished the half with a 7-0 run to go into the break down 39-30.
In the second half, the Marlins started well going on a 4-1 run to cut the lead down to 40-34. However, the Generals fought back and went on a 17-4 run to head into the final frame up 57-38. The Generals dominated the second half and went on to win 78-44.
