Five Marlins Hit Double Figures in Loss to W&L

The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team (15-5, 6-5 ODAC) was defeated by Washington & Lee in conference play 77-68. 

Khai Seargeant led the team with 16 points, shooting 4-for-16 from the field, 1-for-5 from beyond the arc, and 7-for-10 from the free throw line, and grabbed six rebounds, Jordan Crump recorded 14 points shooting 4-for-10 from the field, 4-for-7 from deep, and 2-for-2 from the free throw line, with seven rebounds, and one assist, and Amari Moorer had 11 points shooting 5-for-10 from the field, had four rebounds, three blocks, and two assists. 

Keys to the Game:

  • The Generals shot 23-for-54 (42.6%) from the field, 7-for-21 (33.3%) from three-point territory, and 24-for-31 (77.4%) from the charity stripe, while the Marlins shot 24-for-56 (42.9%) from the field, 9-for-22 (40.9%) from beyond the arc, and 11-for-20 from the free throw line.
  • VWU had the advantage from the bench as they outscored the host 25-8, and had 10 second chance points compared to the Generals' five.
  • W&L forced 16 turnovers, with four blocks, and nine steals to score 16 points, compared to the Marlins defense that forced seven turnovers, five blocks, and four steals to score 10 points off turnovers. 

How It Happened: 

Washington & Lee jumped out to a 10-3 run to start the game, but the Marlins fought back going on a 15-8 run to tie the game at 18-18. Virginia Wesleyan then went on an 11-6 run to lead 29-24 with 10:52 left in the first half. 

The Generals went on a 4-3 run to cut the lead to 29-28, but VWU responded with an 8-3 run to lead 37-31. W&L fought back closing out the first half with an 11-4 run to take a 42-41 lead into halftime. 

The Marlins came out of the break strong going on a 9-3 run to lead 53-48 with 12:12 left in the game. The Generals chipped away to the Marlins lead that brought the score to 61-58. Washington & Lee's offense erupted going on a 13-1 run over the next four minutes to lead 68-62 with 4:23 left in the game. 

 The Marlins made two straight buckets to cut the host lead to 68-66, but the Generals responded with a 5-0 run to lead 73-66. With under two minutes to go the Marlins had to conserve time to complete the comeback by fouling W&L. However, the host converted their free throws and sealed the 77-68 win over the Marlins.
