The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (3-15, 1-11 ODAC) lost to Lynchburg 71-57.
Meadow Dyke led the offense with 12 points shooting 5-for-12 from the field, and 1-for-4 from beyond the arc, and had two rebounds, Grace Harriman scored nine points shooting 4-for-13 from the field, grabbed seven rebounds, have two steals, and one assist.
Keys to the Game:
- The Hornets shot 26-for-64 (40.6%) from the field, shot 8-for-21 (38.1%) from deep, and 11-for-17 from the free throw line, while the Marlins shot 24-for-63 (38.1%), shot 2-for-12 (16.7%) from three-point territory, and shot 7-for-10 (70.0%) from the charity stripe.
- Lynchburg outrebounded the Marlins 49-34 with 18 offensive rebounds, compared to Virginia Wesleyan's 10 offensive rebounds.
- The visitors had 20 fast break points compared to VWU's 11, and the Hornets had 17 second chance points versus the Marlins' 11.
How It Happened:
Lynchburg started hot, shooting a three in the first eight seconds, but the Marlins clawed back to take a 6-3 lead. The Marlins offense clicked as they outscored the Hornets 10-5 to lead 18-10 with 2:23 left in the first quarter. VWU led 18-13 at the end of the first frame.
Virginia Wesleyan continued their momentum from the first quarter going on a 6-3 run to lead 24-16. The Hornets responded with an 8-3 run to cut the lead down to 27-24. Lynchburg managed to cut the lead down to 32-30 before the break.
Coming out at halftime the Hornets made some adjustments and went on a 6-4 run to tie the game at 36 all. This sparked the Lynchburg offense as they went on a 14-6 run over the next five minutes to take a 50-42 lead. The Marlins fought back going on a 6-3 run to close out the third quarter and bring the score to 53-48.
With a five-point lead heading into the final frame, the Hornets went on an 18-5 run in the first seven minutes of the quarter to lead 71-53. VWU ended the game with a 4-0 run to cut the lead to 71-57.
