Women's Basketball Falls to Randolph

The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (3-14, 1-10 ODAC) fell to Randolph College 59-43. 

Grace Harriman led the team with 10 points shooting 5-for-6 from the field, five rebounds, one assist, and one steal, Maesyn Blaylock scored eight points shooting 2-for-7 from the field, had two rebounds, three assists, and three steals, and Mekayla Clarke recorded six points shooting 2-for-5 from the field, grabbed five rebounds, one assist, and one steal.

Keys to the Game:

  • The Wildcats shot 19-for-63 (30.2%) from the field, 3-for-19 (15.8%) from beyond the arc, and 18-for-22 (81.8%) from the free throw line, while the Marlins shot 17-for-44 (38.6%) from the field, and shot 8-for-15 (53.3%) from the charity stripe. 
  • Randolph scored 31 points off turnovers compared to VWU's 12, and the host had 19 second chance points compared to four for the Marlins.

How It Happened:

The Wildcats started well jumping out to a 7-3 lead, but the Marlins responded with a 5-0 run to tie the game at 7-7. VWU ended the first quarter with an 11-10 after outscoring the host 4-3. 

Randolph took a 14-13 lead in the first five minutes outscoring the Marlins 4-2. Virginia Wesleyan rallied going on an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to lead 21-14 and went into the break with a 21-16 lead. 

The Wildcats offense awoke after the break starting with a 9-0 run to take a 25-21 lead. The host kept up the pressure and outscored the Marlins 24-6 in the third quarter to lead 40-27 heading into the final frame. 

In the fourth quarter, the host went on a 6-0 run to lead 46-27, but the Marlins responded with a 6-2 run to bring the score to 48-33 with 5:47 left. The Marlins down 54-33, went on a 10-5 run in the last three minutes to cut down the lead, but the lead was too great and VWU lost 59-43.
