Men's Basketball Ends Two Game Skid in Win Over Randolph 72-49

The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team (15-4, 6-4 ODAC) defeated conference opponent Randolph 72-49 to end a two-game losing streak. 

Jordan Crump led the offense scoring 16 points shooting 6-for-14 from the field, 4-for-10 from deep, grabbed six rebounds, and had three steals, Waylo Wilson scored 10 points shooting 4-for-6 from the field, recorded nine rebounds, and one block, and Khai Seargeant had 10 points shooting 3-for-7 from the field, had five rebounds, two assists, and one steal. 

Keys to the Game:

  • The Marlins shot 27-for-66 (40.9%) from the field, shot 7-for-32 (21.9%) from three-point territory, and 11-for-20 (55.0%) from the charity stripe, and the Wildcats shot 18-for-59 (30.5%) from the field, shot 4-for-22 (18.2%) from beyond the arc, and was 9-for-13 (69.2%) from the free throw line.
  • The Marlins had the advantage down low outrebounding Randolph 48-43 with 15 offensive rebounds compared to the visitor's 11. VWU scored 34 points in the paint versus the Wildcats 22.
  • Virginia Wesleyan scored 15 points off turnovers, the VWU defense caused 16 turnovers, with nine steals and three blocks, while Randolph tallied five points off turnovers, with 10 turnovers with four steals and two blocks. 

How It Happened:

The Marlins' defense was relentless as they started the game holding the Wildcats to two points to lead 15-2 and forced four turnovers during those six minutes. 

Randolph went on a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 17-8, but the Marlins responded with a 13-0 run over the next three and a half minutes to lead 30-8 with 6:33 left in the first half. Virginia Wesleyan outscored the visitors 11-9 the rest of the half taking a 41-17 lead into halftime. 

Virginia Wesleyan came out of the break hungry, going on a 12-0 run to lead 53-17. The Marlins followed that run outscoring the Wildcats 14-8 to lead 61-31 with 10:18 left in the game. 

Over the next five minutes, Randolph went on a 10-6 run to cut the lead down to 67-41 with 4:20 left in the game. The Wildcats chipped away at the Marlins' large lead outscoring the host 8-5 down the stretch, but the late surge wasn't enough and the Marlins took home the 72-49 win.
