The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (3-13, 1-9 ODAC) lost to conference opponent Guilford 81-52.
Juliana Anderson led the offense with 14 points shooting 6-for-8 from the field, and 2-for-3 from beyond the arc, grabbed one rebound and had two assists, Maesyn Blaylock had seven points shooting 1-for-3 from the field, 5-for-8 from the free throw line, nabbed seven rebounds, two steals, and one assist, and Gabrielle Athy registered seven points shooting 3-for-4 from the field, grabbed four rebounds, one assist, one block, and one steal.
Keys to the Game:
- The Quakers shot 29-for-73 (39.7%) from the field, 10-for-19 (52.6%) from deep, and 13-for-18 (72.2%) from the charity stripe, and the Marlins shot 17-for-42 (40.5%) from the field, 3-for-9 (33.3%) from beyond the arc, and 15-for-27 (55.6%) from the free throw line.
- Guilford outrebounded the Marlins 42-35 and had 36 points in the paint compared to Virginia Wesleyan's 18.
How It Happened:
A close start to the game as the teams tied four times in the first five minutes of play. Guilford held a 10-8 lead at the 4:39 mark in the first quarter. The Quakers end the first quarter with a 5-3 run to lead 15-11 at the end of the first frame.
Guilford went on an 8-2 run to start the second quarter to lead 23-13, but Virginia Wesleyan responded with a 7-2 run to cut the lead down to 25-20 midway through the second quarter. Guilford went on a 13-5 run to head into halftime up 38-25.
In the third quarter, the Quakers outscored the Marlins 30-10 to lead 68-35 heading into the final frame.
The host went on a 10-4 run to start the fourth quarter to lead 78-39 midway through the quarter. VWU responded with a 7-0 run to cut the lead down to 78-46. Virginia Wesleyan kept chipping away at the lead going on a 6-3 run down the stretch to outscore the host 17-13 in the fourth quarter. The lead was too great and the Quakers won 81-52.
