No. 8 Guilford Tops Virginia Wesleyan

The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team (14-4, 5-4 ODAC) fell to No. 8 Guilford College 77-44. 

Jordan Crump led the offense with 10 points going 3-for-9 from the field, 1-for-5 from beyond the arc, and had four rebounds, Miles Wallace had seven points shooting 3-for-4 from the field, recorded four assists, two rebounds, and two steals, and Elijah Gardner scored seven points shooting 3-for-6 from the field, and 1-for-4 from deep, registered three assists, two rebounds, and one steal.

Keys to the Game:

  • The Quakers shot 29-for-60 (48.3%) from the field, 11-for-22 (50.0%) from three-point territory, and 8-for-9 (88.9%) from the charity stripe, while the Marlins shot 16-for-50 (32.0%) from the field, 4-for-25 (16.0%) from beyond the arc, and 8-for-15 (53.3%) from the free throw line. 
  • Guilford had the advantage in the paint outrebounding VWU 41-25, and had 30 points in the paint compared to the Marlins 22. 
  • Virginia Wesleyan pushed the pace scoring 13 fastbreak points compared to the Quakers 2. 

How It Happened:

Guilford opened up the game outscoring the Marlins 6-5. The Quakers extended their lead with an 8-0 run to lead 14-5, but Virginia Wesleyan countered with a 10-2 run to cut the lead down to 16-15. Guilford outscored the Marlins over the next four possessions 4-3 to lead 20-18.

The Quakers offense went on a giant 15-3 run over the next five minutes to lead 35-21 with 3:01 left in the half. Guilford went into the break with a 40-24 lead. 

Coming out of halftime the host went on a 7-0 run to take a 47-24 lead at the 17:46 mark. The Marlins' offense was able to match Guilford with each team scoring five points in the next two minutes, but the Quakers went on an 11-0 run shooting 3-for-4 from deep to lead 63-29. The Marlins were unable to mount a comeback and lost the game 77-44.
