The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (3-12, 1-8 ODAC) was defeated by Eastern Mennonite University 49-36.
Mekayla Clarke led the offense scoring 10 points shooting 5-for-12 from the field, had seven rebounds, and five assists, and teammate Meadow Dyke registered 10 points shooting 4-for-8 from the field, 2-for-4 from beyond the arc, and had one steal.
Keys to the Game:
- The Royals shot 18-for-47 (38.3%) from the field, 5-for-12 (41.7%) from beyond the arc, and 8-for-12 (66.7%) from the charity stripe, and the Marlins shot 16-for-60 (26.7%) from the field, 2-for-19 (10.5%) from three-point territory, and 2-for-9 (22.2%) from the free throw line.
- The Marlins had the advantage down low as they outrebounded EMU 41-37, and scored 22 points in the paint compared to the Royals 18.
How It Happened:
The Royals started strong with a 17-0 run in the eight minutes of the game and led 19-3 after the first quarter.
Virginia Wesleyan fought back in the second quarter, as they went on an 8-1 run in the first four minutes of the second quarter to cut the lead down to 20-11. The Marlins outscored EMU 11-4 in the second quarter to cut the lead down to 23-14 at halftime.
Eastern Mennonite started the second half with an 11-4 run going 3-for-4 from deep to lead 34-18 midway through the third quarter. The Royals held a 42-20 lead heading into the final frame.
VWU outscored the visitors 7-6 to start the fourth quarter, which sparked a 10-0 run. However, time ran out for the host and they lost 49-36.
