The Virginia Wesleyan University men's soccer team (3-0) defeated Regent University 3-0 in non-conference play.
The Marlins came ready to face off against Regent University. This marked Freshman goalie,
Matt Yates's debut as a Marlin, a game he'd been eagerly awaiting.
The Marlins held a steady passing game plan on defense and held possession for the majority of the first 20 minutes of the game.
Eventually, the Marlins campaign started with a
Nolan Schulte goal in the 4
th minute. On a play with heads-up passing from
Alex Moody. Marking Nolan's first goal as a Marlin and the first goal of the game.
Nate Mitchell paved a precise run for the Marlins on the near sideline. As he made his way into the penalty box and crossed inwards to
Juan Tovar who finished from a few yards out in the 21
st minute to put the Marlins up 2-0.
Both teams kept steady possessions for the remainder of the first half and kept the score 2-0 going into halftime.
The Marlins attack remained seemingly relentless as they continued to register shots throughout the second half. Freshman
Josh Vincent,
Diego Armas,
Ryan Kozlej, and
Christopher Garcia Ortega further the attack to keep
Regent's defense busy.
In the 58th minute freshman
Christopher Garcia Ortega redeemed himself by scoring on a breakaway after just getting a yellow card the play prior. This head-up play brought the score to 3-0.
The Marlins are off to a hot start with a perfect 3-0 record.
The team will stay in Virginia Beach to host Randolph College (1-0-1) on September 9
