Smith Ties Person-Best in 3-0 Win Over Averett

The Virginia Wesleyan women's Volleyball team (16-2, 6-0 ODAC) defeated Averett 3-0, winning 25-21, 25-18, and 25-16. 

Hannah Smith tied her career-high 16 kills in the game, her previous career-high was 16 kills against William Peace.

The Cougars, with their home crowd, took a 5-2 lead to start the first set, but the Marlins put together a 3-0 run to tie the game at 5-5. Virginia Wesleyan went on to lead 7-6, but Averett went on a 4-1 run to lead 10-8. The host kept their lead and built a 20-16 lead over the conference leaders, but the Marlins stormed back with a 9-1 run to win set one 25-21. 

Virginia Wesleyan kept their momentum from the first set win and jumped out to a 7-3 lead. The Cougars chipped away at the Marlins' lead until VWU put together a 5-1 run to extend their lead to 18-12. Averett went on a 4-2 run to cut the lead to 20-17, but the Marlins finished off the set by outscoring the host 5-1, winning set two 25-18. 

With two sets in hand, the Marlins kept up the pressure and led 6-2 early in set three. Virginia Wesleyan kept their lead, and midway through the set went on a 9-2 run to lead 20-10. The Cougars countered with a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 23-16, but VWU won the final two points to win the third set 25-16 and seal the win.

Hannah Smith led the Marlins offense as she tied a career-high 16 kills, with a .361 hitting percentage and eight digs, Emma Claytor tallied 12 kills, with a team-high .455 hitting percentage, four block assists, and two digs, and Abigail Mahoney had eight kills with a .167 hitting percentage, three digs, and two block assists.

Haley Sutton led the team with 32 assists, had four digs, and three service aces, and teammate Cara Caruso registered a team-high 19 digs, one assist, and one service ace.
