Volleyball Split with a Win over Marymount and Fall to No. 11 NYU

The Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team went 1-1 today with a 3-0 win over Marymount University and a 3-1 loss to No. 11 NYU. 

Game One:
VWU came out strong going on a 9-2 run to start the match. The Saints countered with a 4-0 run to cut the lead to 9-6, but the Marlins responded with a 5-0 run to lead 16-8. The Marlins increased their lead with a 6-2 run to lead 22-12 and went on to win set one 25-14. 

Marymount built a 7-6 lead over Virginia Wesleyan after going on a 4-2 run, but the Marlins fought back going on a 11-1 run to lead 19-9. The Saints rallied to cut the lead down to 21-13, but VWU won set two 25-14.

In the third set, the Marlins jumped out to a 7-2 lead, and after Marymount went on a 3-0 run, the Marlins extended their lead further going on an 8-0 run to lead 15-4. The Saints countered with a 7-2 run to bring the score to 17-11. However, Virginia Wesleyan went on to win the third set 25-18.   

Morgan Ludovici led the Marlins offense with six kills, a .235 hitting percentage, six aces, nine digs, one block assists, and one assist, Hannah Smith led the team with 10 kills, a .273 hitting percentage, eight digs, and three block assists, and Abigail Mahoney recorded nine kills, with a .304 hitting percentage, five digs, and three block assists. 

Haley Sutton led the team with 20 assists, she also recorded four digs and two service aces, and Cara Caruso led the team with 14 digs, had three assists, and one service ace. 

Game Two: 
A close start to the match against NYU until the Marlins went on a 5-1 run to lead 10-6. The Violets didn't go away and went on a 5-1 run to cut the lead to 14-13. NYU continued their strong run of play and outscored VWU 5-2 to take a 19-17 lead. The Violets outscored the Marlins 6-3 to win set one 25-22. 

The Violets jumped out to a 9-4 lead before the Marlins countered with a 5-1 run to cut the lead to 9-10. NYU rallied with a 5-1 run to lead 15-10. The two teams traded rallies, with the Marlins staying within striking distance of the Violets, but NYU ended the set with a 6-3 run to win the second set 25-19. 

VWU's offense got going in the third set as they led 8-4 early, but the Violets countered with a 4-1 run to tie the game at 9-9. The Marlins fought back with a 5-1 run to lead 14-10. NYU came back with a 4-1 run to cut the lead to 15-14, however, the Marlins responded with a 10-2 run to win the set 25-16. 

In the fourth set, NYU built a 13-6 lead over the Marlins. Virginia Wesleyan chipped away at the host's lead and cut it to 10-15. However, NYU went on a 5-1 run to lead 20-11. The Violets went on to win the fourth set 25-14. 

Abigail Mahoney led the offense with 13 kills, a .375 hitting percentage, two digs, and one block assist, Emma Claytor recorded 11 kills with a .310 hitting percentage, one solo block and two block assists, and one dig, and Hannah Smith registered 10 kills, with a .207 hitting percentage, 11 digs, and two assists. 

Haley Sutton led the team with 23 assists, three digs, one kill, and one service ace, Morgan Ludovici tallied eight kills, with a .240 hitting percentage, led the team with 14 digs, had three service aces, and two block assists, and Niya Nash registered 16 assists, eight digs, one kill, and one service ace.
