The Virginia Wesleyan University women's volleyball team (10-1, 1-0 ODAC) was defeated by Emerson in five sets; 24-26, 24-25, 25-20, 25-21, and 11-15.
Emma Claytor led the Marlins offense as she had 14 kills, with a .480 hitting percentage, one solo block and six block assists, three digs, two assists, and two aces,
Abigail Mahoney tallied 17 kills, with a .344 hitting percentage, eight digs, five block assists, and one assist, and
Morgan Ludovici had nine kills, 16 digs, two aces, two block assists, and two assists.
After going down 2-0 the Marlins went on an 8-1 run to lead 8-3 in the first set. VWU kept the pressure on a built a 13-7 lead, but the Lions scored six straight points to tie the set at 13-13. After trading several points, the Marlins strung together a 4-1 rally to lead 21-18, the Lions fought back and tied the game at 21 all. Emerson outscored the Marlins 5-3 to finish the set and win set one 26-24.
In the second set, Virginia Wesleyan had a narrow 9-5 lead, before the Lions went on a 3-1 run to cut the lead to 10-8. The Marlins responded with a 5-0 run to lead 15-8 midway through the set. Emerson didn't give up and fought hard to cut the lead down to 16-14, but VWU outscored the Lions 4-1 to lead 20-15. The Lions had an 8-1 run to take a 23-21 lead in the final stage of the set and went on to win the second set 25-23.
Emerson jumped out to a 6-3 lead after taking the first two sets, but the Marlins fought back to tie the game at 8-8. VWU outscored Emerson 5-2 to lead 13-10. The Lions stopped the bleeding for a second, but the Marlins went on a 4-0 run to lead 18-12. Emerson came back with a 6-1 run to cut the lead to 19-18. Virginia Wesleyan ended the set with a 6-2 run to win set three 25-20.
The Lions built a 7-3 lead early in the fourth set, but Virginia Wesleyan stormed back to cut down the lead to 11-9. The Marlins chipped away at the lead and were able to tie the fourth set at 14-14. Emerson outscored VWU 7-2 to lead 21-16 until the Marlins stormed back with a 9-0 run to take the fourth set 25-21.
In the fifth and final set, the Lions jumped out to a 7-3 lead, but the Marlins fought back to cut the lead to 8-6 before the teams switched sides. Emerson kept the momentum and outscored Virginia Wesleyan 3-1 to lead 11-7, but the Marlins fought back with back-to-back points for an Emerson timeout at 11-9. The Lions came out of the timeout and outscored the Marlins 4-2 to win the fifth set 15-11.
